Turkish military build-up on Amediyê border
The Turkish state has been concentrating troop contingents near Amediyê in Southern Kurdistan for days. A large-scale ground operation appears to be imminent
The Turkish occupying forces are moving through the areas controlled by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. For days, large contingents of troops have been sent from Duhok to Amediyê. Last night, a new convoy consisting of 40 armoured vehicles and heavy weapons was observed in the region.
Amediyê borders directly on Metîna and the western Zap region in the guerrilla-held Medya Defense Zones in northern Iraq. In the contested area of Girê Amediyê, north-east of the city, guerrillas have been carrying out effective actions against Turkish forces in recent months. On Saturday, an attempt by Turkish troops to advance on Girê Amediyê was thwarted by the guerrillas. On the other hand, the villages in the vicinity of Amediyê are repeatedly bombed by the Turkish air force.
