Israeli army chief approves
plans to occupy Gaza City

Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir greenlights Gaza City occupation plan involving evacuation, encirclement, and gradual military entry

Israeli Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has approved plans to occupy Gaza City, spanning two phases: a first phase involving evacuating and blockading the city, while the second phase entails a gradual, slow military entry into the urban area.

Israeli media reported on Sunday that the Israeli army's Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, has approved plans to occupy Gaza City, with Channel Kan stating that the plan is divided into two phases and expected to take four months to execute, according to Israeli estimates.

The first phase will involve establishing so-called "humanitarian zones with essential infrastructure" in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, paving the way for a large-scale evacuation of civilians from Gaza City. This will be followed by the launch of a ground operation to encircle the city while continuing the evacuation process.

In the second phase, Israeli forces will gradually enter and occupy the city, advancing slowly while continuing airstrikes.

Israel decides to occupy Gaza City

On August 7, the Israeli cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan, which includes the occupation of Gaza City, though the meeting was marked by sharp tensions as Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir raised multiple concerns, including warnings of a grave and imminent threat to Israeli captives held in the strip, only to have all his objections dismissed by the council members.

Among Zamir's key concerns is that after occupying Gaza City, the Israeli military anticipates facing guerrilla warfare operations by Hamas within the controlled areas, requiring meticulous planning to maintain dominance while minimizing these risks.

Since Israel launched its war on Gaza the cumulative casualties from the ongoing Israeli offensive have reached 61,944 fatalities and 155,886 injuries, with 10,400 killed and 43,845 wounded since March 18, 2025
Gaza hospitals have recorded 47 fatalities, including nine bodies pulled from rubble, along with 226 injured victims in 24 hours, while rescue teams report numerous additional casualties still trapped under destroyed buildings and in streets where relentless airstrikes prevent access to survivors.

BBC witnesses Israeli settlers' attack
on Palestinian farm in West Bank

The BBC's Lucy Williamson witnessed an attack by masked settlers

BBC News, Turmus Aya, in the occupied West Bank

From among the broken remains of Brahim Hamaiel's olive trees, in the occupied West Bank, we saw the masked men approach.

A dozen settlers, charging down from the illegal outpost above his farm and across the field towards us, moving fast and carrying large sticks.

A sudden and unprovoked attack

Brahim had been showing us the trees he said had been hacked to pieces this week by settlers from the outpost.

Several masked men run down a dry hill carrying various weapons

Masked settlers ran into the Palestinian farmland

His family have farmed olives here on land near Turmus Aya, for generations, making it a target for extremist settlers who think killing Palestinian trees and livestock will also kill the idea of a Palestinian State, by forcing residents like Brahim off their land.

"Fear is natural," Brahim had told me, looking up at the ridge where tarpaulin flapped at the settlers' lookout post in front of a few caravans and makeshift homes. "But there's something stronger than fear that drives me to stay here – the scent of my ancestors and an attachment dating back hundreds of years – even if I pay the price with my blood."

As the masked men run towards us, we pull back to the road and drive a safe distance away.

Within minutes, some of Brahim's neighbours from the surrounding farms and villages gather with catapults and stones to confront the attackers.

Brahim Hamaiel stands next to the broken remains of his olive trees

Vegetation by the side of the road is set on fire, its smoke signalling the site of the confrontation, as settlers on a quad bike chase away a volunteer emergency crew trying to reach a farmhouse in the middle of the field.

Stop shooting! My daughter is dead': Woman killed as West Bank power struggle rages

This is now a familiar routine. Palestinians living in these villages south of Nablus say there are attacks and confrontations on their lands every week, and that settlers are using these kinds of tactics to take over the land, field by field.

But the speed and spread of this attack is breathtaking

In little more than an hour, dozens of settlers had fanned out across the hills. We watched as they broke into an isolated building, and methodically set fire to vehicles and homes.

Shepherds on the furthest ridge rushed their flocks away, as the hillside behind them broke into flames, smoke billowing up from several places.

By then, Palestinians arriving from across the area to help their neighbours found the main access road blocked by the Israeli army, as the destruction continued.

One Palestinian was reportedly beaten by settlers, and the army later told us that both sides had hurled rocks at each other, and that Palestinians had burned tyres. It said four Israeli civilians received medical treatment at the scene.

Among the crowd waiting near the army roadblock, we found Rifa Said Hamail, her frantic gestures giving way to a warm smile and embrace when we spoke to her.

A large expanse of land with cars dotted across. Dark smoke billows up towards the sky in the right hand corner where a fire rages on.

Israeli settlers set fire to vehicles and homes

Rifa told us her husband was trapped in their farmhouse near Brahim's olive farm, and surrounded by settlers, but that the army wouldn't let her pass.

"Every other day the settlers do this to us – they attack us, cut down the olive trees, and burn the farms," she said. "This is not a life. No one can stop them. We have nothing to resist them with. They have weapons, we have nothing."

We later learned that settlers had torched part of their property, and that Rifa's husband had been left with cuts to his face and leg, after being hit with rocks.

The Israeli organisation Peace Now, which monitors the spread of settlements in the West Bank, says the number of outposts – and settler aggression – has multiplied.

Palestinian olive harvest under threat from Israeli attacks

Since the beginning of last year, it says, some 100 outposts have appeared across the West Bank. It also found that hundreds of square kilometres of land had been taken over by settlers in the past few years using the same violent pattern of intimidation – encouraged, it says, by government support and a lack of proper law enforcement by Israel.

Last week, Israel's far-right Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, announced the creation of thousands of new housing units in a large West Bank settlement bloc further south, saying it would "bury the idea of a Palestinian state".

Between 5-11 August, the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs documented at least 27 settler attacks against Palestinians that resulted in casualties, property damage or both, across two dozen different communities. These attacks, it said, led to the displacement of 18 households
We weren't able to speak to any of the settlers involved in the attack we witnessed. The local settlers' council told us there were elements on both sides seeking provocation, which it strongly condemned.

Brahim told us he had filed two separate complaints about the attacks on his land, but few Palestinians here have much faith in Israeli justice or security forces, saying repeatedly that they protect only the settlers.

One of the volunteer emergency crews who came to help during the clashes on Saturday told me the Israeli army had prevented them from reaching the scene.

"We were trying to rescue the young men, when the army came, honking at us and telling us to get away from here," Yahya al-Khatib said.

"We were volunteers wearing our vests. We're not here to attack or harm settlers. We want to put out fires and treat injured people. But they [the army] stop us and stand in our way."

Mother of 18-year-old Hamdan Abu-Elaya cries at his funeral, after he was shot and killed by Israel troops

Tensions between local residents and settlers are complicated by the increasingly heavy control of Israeli forces across the West Bank, which has seen the evacuation and widespread demolition of refugee camps across the northern West Bank.

From January to June this year, the UN found that 149 Palestinians were killed by Israeli settlers or soldiers in the occupied West Bank.

Hours after the clashes that erupted around Brahim's farm on Saturday, another Palestinian casualty was added to that grim tally.

Eighteen-year-old Hamdan Abu-Elaya was shot and killed by Israeli troops in al- Mughayyir village, a few miles from Brahim's field
His mother told us he'd gone to see the fires lit by settlers nearby. "I raised him for 18 years, and he was gone in a minute," she said.

We asked the Israeli army what happened. It said "terrorists" had thrown rocks and Molotov cocktails at troops in the village, and that soldiers had "responded with fire to remove the threat".

Hundreds crowded into Hamdan's house for his funeral on Sunday, as his body was carried in for his mother to say goodbye.

His father, Ameen Abu Elaya, raging to friends and family, said he refused to show the Israelis his tears.

"They thought if they killed our son, we would leave," he said. "I will not shout and scream and say 'why has he gone?' I'm not sad that he passed. I encourage young men to do anything they can against the criminal occupier."

At the local mosque, there was a hero's welcome for Hamdan's body as it was carried in for the funeral prayer – vast Palestinian flags hung alongside those of Fatah and Hamas from the rooves and windows; crowds lining the path of the bier.

Israeli army data reveals 83%
civilian death rate in Gaza

Leaked IOF database shows 83% of Palestinians killed in the Israeli war on Gaza are civilians, exposing the immense human toll of the ongoing genocide

Of the Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, five out of every six have been civilians, according to leaked statistics from the Israeli occupation forces' data, revealing the extent of the slaughter perpetrated in the besieged enclave.

A joint investigation by the Guardian, the Israeli publication +972 Magazine, and the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call has found that, as of May and 19 months into the war, Israeli intelligence officials listed 8,900 named fighters from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad as dead or “probably dead."

In May, 53,000 Palestinian civilians had been killed by Israel according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, a toll that includes both resistance fighters and civilians, meaning that the 8,900 named fighters in the IOF's databases constitute only 17% of the total death toll, while civilians cover the remaining 83%.

This apparent ratio of civilians to combatants among the dead is extremely high for modern warfare and remains so even when compared to conflicts notorious for indiscriminate killing, such as the Syrian war and the Sudanese civil war.

Therése Pettersson from the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, which tracks civilian casualties worldwide stated, “That proportion of civilians among those killed would be unusually high, particularly as it has been going on for such a long time,” adding that, “If you single out a particular city or battle in another conflict, you could find similar rates, but very rarely overall."

Israeli military scrambles to respond

When approached for comment by Local Call and +972 Magazine, the Israeli occupation forces did not dispute the existence of the database or the data on Hamas and PIJ deaths, and when The Guardian requested a statement on the same information, a spokesperson stated they had decided to “rephrase” their response.

In a brief statement sent to the Guardian, the Israeli occupation forces said that the "figures presented in the article are incorrect" without specifying which data was disputed and added that the numbers "do not reflect the data available in the IOF’s systems" without detailing which systems.

According to the IOF, the database names 47,653 Palestinians counted as fighters active in both Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, based on alleged internal documents seized in Gaza, which The Guardian could not view or verify.

Multiple intelligence sources familiar with the database told The Guardian that the military viewed it as the only authoritative tally of fighter casualties. While Israeli politicians regularly dismiss the Gaza health ministry's numbers as propaganda, the Israeli army also considers its toll reliable, according to a report by Local Call, revealing that the former head of its military intelligence division recently appeared to cite it.

Even though much of Gaza has been reduced to ruins and tens of thousands of people have been killed, the classified database, according to the army's assessment, lists nearly 40,000 individuals who are considered fighters and are still alive.

Famine confirmed in Gaza City

The United Nations chief has described the famine confirmed in Gaza City and its surrounding areas as a "failure of humanity"

Antonio Gutteres said the situation was a "man-made disaster" after a UN-backed body, which identifies hunger levels around the world, raised its food insecurity status in parts of the territory to Phase 5 - the highest and most severe.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) says more than half a million people across Gaza are facing "catastrophic" conditions characterised by "starvation, destitution and death".
The UN says Israel is continuing to restrict the amount of aid entering Gaza, which Israel also denies.

Its denials are in direct contradiction to what more than 100 humanitarian groups, witnesses on the ground, multiple UN bodies, and several of Israel's allies, including the UK, have said.

The IPC says that an "immediate, at-scale response" is needed or there will be an "unacceptable escalation" in famine-related deaths.

It predicts that between mid-August and the end of September, famine will expand across the strip to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.

During this period, almost a third of the population - nearly 641,000 people - are expected to face "catastrophic conditions" in IPC Phase 5, while the number of people to face "emergency" conditions in IPC Phase 4 will likely increase to 1.14 million - or 58% of the population
The report also projects that up to June 2026, malnutrition will threaten the lives of 132,000 children aged under five.

Since the start of the war, Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry has reported that 271 people have died of malnutrition - including 112 children.

Only four previous famines have been classified by the IPC since it was established in 2004, the most recent in Sudan in 2024.

The IPC cannot officially declare famine - that is usually done by governments or the United Nations.

Reem Tawfiq Khader, 41, a mother of five from Gaza City, said: "The declaration of famine came too late, but it is still important.

"We haven't eaten any protein for five months. My youngest child is four years old - he doesn't know what fruit and vegetables look or taste like."

Rida Hijjeh, 29, said her five-year-old daughter Lamia's weight had dropped from 19kg (42lbs) to 10.5kg (23lbs). She said Lamia was healthy before the war began and had no prior illnesses.

"This all happened only because of the famine," she said. "There is simply nothing for the child to eat. There are no vegetables, no fruits."

Now, Lamia suffers from swelling in her legs, thinning hair, and nerve problems, she said.

In response to the report, UN aid chief Tom Fletcher said the famine was entirely preventable, saying food could not get through to the Palestinian territory "because of systematic obstruction by Israel".

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said: "Just when it seems there are no words left to describe the living hell in Gaza, a new one has been added: 'famine'."

He described it as "not a mystery," but rather "a man-made disaster, a moral indictment, and a failure of humanity itself".

He added that Israel has "unequivocal obligations under international law - including the duty of ensuring food and medical supplies of the population".

Phillipe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa), said: "This is starvation by design & man-made by the Government of Israel".

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk described the famine as "the direct result of actions taken by the Israeli Government", which has "unlawfully restricted" the entry of aid
UK foreign secretary David Lammy said described the famine as a "moral outrage."

"The Israeli government's refusal to allow sufficient aid into Gaza has caused this man-made catastrophe," he wrote on X.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement: "Israel does not have a policy of starvation, Israel has a policy of preventing starvation. Since the beginning of the war Israel has enabled 2 million tons of aid to enter the Gaza Strip, over one ton of aid per person."

In recent months, Israel has come under widespread international condemnation for the aid situation in the Gaza Strip.

Last month, after weeks of mounting pressure, the Israeli military said it had airdropped humanitarian aid into Gaza - a move that was criticised at the time by aid agencies as a "grotesque distraction".

Aid groups say air drops are ineffective and that Israel should allow more aid in through the normal routes

Other aid drops have since taken place - but warnings have been issued about their safety, with reports that civilians were hit and killed by the falling pallets.

Earlier this week, BBC Verify found 10 separate occasions where aid was dropped into an area that the Israeli military has explicitly warned people not to enter
In addition to airdrops, Israel said it would designate humanitarian corridors for UN convoys. However, on Tuesday the UN warned that the "trickle of aid" entering Gaza was insufficient to "avert widespread starvation".

Cogat, the Israeli military body in charge of aid, says roughly 300 aid trucks are entering daily, but the UN says 600 trucks of supplies a day are needed.

The IPC report comes as Israel prepares to launch a new military offensive aimed at occupying Gaza City.

At least 62,122 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.

Most of Gaza's population has also been displaced multiple times; more than 90% of homes are estimated to be damaged or destroyed; and the healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene systems have collapsed.

Foreign doctors blocked
Israel strangles Gaza

Foreign doctors bringing hope to Gaza’s wounded were barred from entry, while even baby formula was blocked at the border, leaving families and children to endure an ever-deepening humanitarian nightmare

Dr. Mimi Syed from the United States and Dr. Catherine Le Scolin-Quere from France were scheduled to return to Gaza on Thursday to volunteer in local hospitals. However, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Israeli body 'overseeing humanitarian operations', informed them only hours before their planned crossing that they would not be allowed entry.

Syed had previously volunteered in Gaza twice during the ongoing Israeli genocide, in August and December 2024, while Le Scolin-Quere joined her during the December visit. Both were part of a mission organized by an American charity deploying US doctors to crisis zones worldwide.

The two had flown from their home countries to Jordan, from where they intended to cross into occupied Palestine and proceed to Gaza. Instead, on Wednesday evening, they were told their permits had been revoked. A nurse accompanying them was granted entry approval but chose to return home, saying there was no point in going alone.

The doctor believes media criticism prompted ban

After leaving Gaza in December, Syed gave interviews to several international media outlets in which she condemned the Israeli military’s conduct. She recounted being forced to pronounce dozens of children dead after they were shot or struck by airstrikes.

"I think the greatest thing I learned in Gaza is that it's impossible to ignore the truth," she told Haaretz. "After you see what's happening there, it becomes very simple to distinguish between good and bad."

On Thursday, Syed said she believes her public criticism played a key role in the decision to deny her re-entry.

"They don't let journalists enter, and they kill the Gazan journalists who are there, so the doctors who come there reveal the truth to the world," she said. "But they don't want us to tell about what is happening in Gaza, especially now, when they're planning to invade Gaza City."

Aid convoy turned away as brutal Israeli blockade tightens

The doctors’ expulsion coincided with another obstruction of humanitarian relief. On Wednesday, a truck carrying baby formula for Gaza was turned back at a border crossing. The driver was informed that the vehicle could not pass because it was an open truck rather than an enclosed one, a rule that organizers said had never been previously enforced.

In a similar vein, the United Nations confirmed that it continues to face obstacles in bringing food, fuel, medical supplies, and personnel into the enclave. Of the 79 aid requests submitted last week, only 45 were fully approved and carried out.

The UN has repeatedly warned that malnutrition remains a serious concern, with cases continuing to rise amid an unbalanced diet.

From Ground Zero

Charming, wistful, heartbreaking, hopeful and urgent. Palestine’s official entry to the 2025 Academy Awards, “From Ground Zero”, brings dozens of emerging Palestinian artists to the fore in an urgent cry for humanity from a people under siege

Each film, ranging in length from 3 to 6 minutes, presents a unique perspective on the current reality in Gaza. The project, masterminded by legendary Palestinian filmmaker Rashid Masharawi and Exec Produced by Michael Moore, captures the diverse experiences of life in the Palestinian enclave, including the challenges, tragedies and moments of resilience faced by its people.

Using a mix of genres including fiction, documentary, docu-fiction, animation and experimental cinema, From Ground Zero presents a rich diversity of stories that reflect the sorrow, joy and hope inherent in Gazan life.

These are only a snapshot of the stories shared. Chronicling the lives of people too often discussed in reference to numbers and refugee camps,

From Ground Zero is an extraordinary time capsule, an urgent response to an ongoing catastrophe, and an artist’s call to bear witness to a crime scene. It is a reminder that despite sustained efforts to silence them - the film stricken from the 2024 Cannes lineup on political grounds after initially being accepted - the voice of the Palestinian people is louder than ever through art and film.

Five journalists among 20 killed
in Israeli strike on hospital

French President Emmanuel Macron is the latest to respond to this morning's strikes on Nasser hospital. Civilians and journalists 'must be protected', Macron says

He calls the strikes "intolerable" as he underlines that civilians and journalists "must be protected in all circumstances".

"The media must be able to carry out their mission freely and independently to cover the reality of the conflict. Humanitarian aid must return. We call on Israel to respect international law," Macron adds.

Macron is one of international leaders to respond to the attack

Germany's foreign office has said it is "shocked" by the killing of several journalists, rescue workers and other civilians. It has called for the attack to be investigated.

Turkey said Israel "has committed yet another crime against humanity".

"Press freedom and human values have been targeted once again," the statement continues.

As a reminder, earlier, when asked for his reaction, US President Trump said he doesn't want to see it, while UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said he was "horrified".

As a reminder, the Israeli military has said it "regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals and does not target journalists as such" while acknowledging it had carried out a strike in the area

Gaza has seen 'most horrific' attacks on press - Committee to Protect Journalists

The five journalists areHussam al-Masri, Hatem Khaled,
Mariam Dagga, Mohammed Salama and Moaz Abu Taha
Israeli strikes have been condemns and there are calls for the international community to hold Israel accountable for its continued unlawful attacks on the press.

A statement, published on the CPJ's website: "Israel's broadcasted killing of journalists in Gaza continues while the world watches and fails to act firmly".

Sara Qudah, the regional director of the CPJ - which is a New York-based organisation that advocates for press freedom globally - calls the recent strikes "the most horrific attacks the press has ever faced in recent history"
Asked about the attack, Trump initially appeared not to be aware of it - saying "When did this happen?. We have to end it all. Nightmare."

Liz Allcock, head of humanitarian protection for Medical Aid for Palestinians, was at Nasser Hospital this morning at the time of the strike. She was metres away from the explosion.

In an interview with the BBC, Allcock says she was visiting a patient when she heard a "very loud explosion, very close by".

She recalls that "within seconds" there were people coming into the hospital with blood and dust. "What we saw there were scenes that I'll never forget.

"We've seen a lot, in the year-and-a-half that I've been here and in the almost two years of this catastrophe, and it just gets worse and worse."

The surgical unit, she explains, was "full of patients who were awaiting surgery or were in recovery from the immediate aftermath of surgery".

Nasser Hospital is already "hugely overcrowded and over-capacitated," Allcock says, and as Israel orders clinics in the north and in Gaza City to evacuate, the hospital will become even more stretched.

The UK's foreign secretary says he is "horrified" by the deadly strike carried out on a hospital in southern Gaza earlier today. David Lammy writes: "Civilians, healthcare workers and journalists must be protected. "We need an immediate ceasefire."

I have just discovered that on Saturday I used some material in a report for BBC Radio 4 taken from the final story that Hussam filed for Reuters. He captured the funeral of an entire family that was killed by an Israeli air strike on a displacement camp in Khan Younis.

Over 190 journalists have been killed since the start of the Israel-Gaza war, says the Committee to Protect Journalists, with at least 180 of them being Palestinians killed by Israel
With every killing, our ability to follow the war, the violence, and the struggles of people on the ground is diminished.

As we've been reporting, the hospital was hit in an Israeli strike this morning. The Israeli military said it carried out a strike in the area, while BBC Verify has verified several graphic videos showing two Israeli strikes on the hospital.

The area hit houses the hospital's emergency department, the inpatient ward and the surgical unit, and that the emergency staircase has been damaged. He adds that among those injured are "critically ill patients who were already receiving care".

"While people in Gaza are being starved, their already limited access to health care is being further crippled by repeated attacks" says Ghebreyesus.

"Stop the attacks on health care. Ceasefire now," the WHO chief adds. 'The reality is nowhere is safe in Gaza'

Hollywood stars back Gaza film
'The Voice of Hind Rajab'

Hollywood stars and major studios have joined Kaouther Ben Hania's The Voice of Hind Rajab, a Gaza-set drama premiering at the Venice Film Festival amid global outrage over Israel's war on Gaza

A Gaza-set drama by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania has drawn major Hollywood support ahead of its debut at the Venice Film Festival. The Voice of Hind Rajab will compete for the festival's top prize on September 3 before moving on to the Toronto International Film Festival for its North American premiere.

The project has attracted an impressive roster of executive producers, including Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Alfonso Cuarón, Jonathan Glazer, and Pitt's Plan B partners Dede Garner and Jeremy Kleiner. Institutional backing has also come from Britain's Film4 and Saudi-owned MBC Studios.

The film recounts the harrowing death of six-year-old Hind Rajab in January 2024, when her family car was riddled with bullets as they attempted to leave Gaza City. Based on voice recordings of Hind's calls with Red Crescent volunteers, the film portrays rescuers' desperate efforts to reach her
Although Israel denied having troops in the area, investigations by The Washington Post, Sky News, and Forensic Architecture documented the presence of Israeli tanks and mapped 335 bullet holes in the car.

The Voice of Hind Rajab is Ben Hania's follow-up to her Oscar-nominated Four Daughters. Her earlier work, The Man Who Sold His Skin, also earned an Academy Award nomination.

The new film was lead-produced by Nadim Cheikhrouha of Mime Films and Tanit Films, with Odessa Rae (RaeFilm Studios) and James Wilson (Jw Films) joining as co-producers. Distribution has already been secured across Europe, with CAA Media Finance handling sales in North America.

Cinema meets resistance

The premiere comes amid Israel's ongoing war on Gaza, where more than 62,000 people have been killed since October 2023. Just this week, Israeli forces bombed Gaza's main southern hospital twice in one day, killing at least 20 people, including rescuers, medical staff, and journalists, prompting international condemnation.

The Venice Festival itself is set to become a stage for protest. Hundreds of grassroots groups plan to march on August 30 in solidarity with Palestinians, while a coalition of artists, including Ken Loach, Céline Sciamma, Audrey Diwan, Toni Servillo, and Palestinian directors Tarzan and Arab Nasser, signed an open letter urging the festival to denounce genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Gaza reeling under deadly strikes

The Palestinian Health Ministry reports dozens killed in brutal Israeli strikes, while famine-related deaths mount as aid distribution sites are repeatedly targeted

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on Thursday that hospitals received the bodies of 71 martyrs, including four retrieved from under the rubble, and 399 injuries over 24 hours. Many victims remain trapped beneath debris and along roads, unreachable due to continued bombardment.

Israeli genocide in Gaza: 62,966 dead 159,266 injured

Since March 18, 2025, the toll has risen to 9,440 Palestinians killed and 47,225 wounded.

The Israeli genocide is ongoing

Israeli airstrikes and artillery fire struck multiple areas across the Gaza Strip on Thursday, killing at least eight Palestinians since dawn, according to reports from Al Mayadeen’s correspondent.

Al-Awda Hospital in al-Nuseirat confirmed the arrival of one fatality and several wounded after Israeli fire targeted starved Palestinians gathered near an aid distribution point. Over 24 hours, the hospital reported five more killings, including a woman and a child, along with 17 injuries. Among the wounded were three children and another woman.

Additional casualties were recorded across the enclave. Six Palestinians were killed in southern Gaza while waiting for humanitarian aid, according to the Nasser Medical Complex. Four others were killed when "Israel" targeted a home on al-Zawiya Street in Gaza City.

Concurrently, helicopter gunfire targeted al-Shuhada Street in the al-Shati refugee camp, prompting emergency crews to rush to the scene. Artillery fire also hit a home in Deir al-Balah, causing significant damage.

In the south, a residential tower in Hamad City, northwest of Khan Younis, was targeted.

The attacks add to the mounting civilian toll in Gaza, where hospitals remain under immense pressure as strikes continue across the besieged enclave.

Famine strangles Gaza

Moreover, as the Israeli-made famine grips Gaza, 22 starved Palestinians were killed since early morning and over 203 were injured while trying to receive aid at designated "aid distribution sites" and were later transported to hospitals, as per the Ministry's report.

The death toll among Palestinians killed while seeking food aid in designated distribution zones has now climbed to 2,180, with more than 16,046 others wounded, according to the report.

The report added that the death toll from starvation and malnutrition in the besieged Strip, with the death of four Palestinians, including two children, has risen to at least 317, among them 121 children.

WFP chief warns Gaza ‘at breaking point’

The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that famine-stricken Gaza is “at breaking point,” calling for the urgent reopening of 200 food distribution points to deliver aid to those most in need.

WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain made the appeal following a visit to the besieged Palestinian enclave, where she witnessed the escalating humanitarian crisis amid "Israel’s" ongoing war on the Strip.

“Enough is enough,” McCain said, describing desperation in Gaza as “soaring” and stressing that she had seen the suffering “firsthand".

Her remarks come just days after the United Nations officially declared a famine in Gaza, citing what it described as the “systematic obstruction” of aid deliveries by "Israel". Israeli authorities rejected the report, dismissing it as “fabricated".

Harrowing scenes in Khan Younis, Deir al-Balah

McCain toured Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah, visiting a nutrition clinic treating malnourished children and meeting displaced mothers struggling to secure food.

“I met starving children receiving treatment for severe malnutrition, and I saw photos of when they were healthy. Today they are unrecognizable,” she stressed.

The WFP official emphasized the need to revive Gaza’s “vast and trusted” network of food distribution points, community kitchens, and bakeries to prevent further loss of life.

“It is urgent that the right conditions are in place so we can reach the most vulnerable and save lives,” she urged.

Occupying Gaza will
cost Israel its soldiers

Abu Obeidah warns that the Israeli occupation of Gaza City will lead to severe military losses, as Palestinian Resistance intensifies and captives remain at risk

Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, stated that the Israeli military would pay a hefty price for its plans to occupy Gaza City with the blood of its soldiers, which would also increase the chances of more troops being captured.

In a post on Telegram on Friday, Abu Obeida warned that these plans to occupy Gaza would spell disaster for "Israel" on both the political and military levels. The military spokesperson further emphasized that the al-Qassam freedom fighters are fully prepared, maintaining high morale, and ready to demonstrate extraordinary examples of heroism and steadfastness, teaching the invaders a harsh lesson.

He stated that "the war criminals, Netanyahu and his Nazi ministers, have deliberately and insistently decided to reduce the number of living prisoners by half and to make the bodies of most of their captured dead disappear forever, for which the enemy's army and its terrorist government will bear full responsibility."

We will preserve every captive as much as we can

Abu Obeidah announced that they would preserve the lives of the enemy's captives "to the best of our ability," adding that "they will be with our freedom fighters in the combat and confrontation zones under the same conditions" and vowing to announce the name, photo, and proof of death for every captive killed by the aggression.

The spokesperson's statement comes after the Israeli occupation army declared Gaza City a "dangerous combat zone" that is not included in the "tactical pause in fighting," yet it has so far issued no evacuation orders or called for new displacements, amid Israeli preparations for a large-scale military operation there.

Palestinian Resistance strikes Merkavas in Jabalia

In parallel, the Palestinian Resistance continues its operations and the execution of ambushes against Israeli forces deep inside various combat axes across the Gaza Strip, inflicting human and material losses on the Israeli occupation forces despite the ongoing aggression and siege.

On Thursday, the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced that its fighters targeted an Israeli Merkava tank and an armored personnel carrier with al-Yassin 105mm shells in the center of Jabalia, in the northern Gaza Strip.

In another operation, the al-Qassam Brigades reported that its fighters used high-explosive improvised explosive devices to destroy two Israeli Merkava tanks on Monday and Tuesday in eastern and central Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip.

The Brigades also confirmed that, in a joint operation with the al-Quds Brigades last Tuesday, their fighters successfully targeted an Israeli Eitan armored personnel carrier with a guided Kornet anti-tank guided missile, achieving a direct hit east of Gaza City's al-Zaytoun district. The brigades noted that their fighters spotted Israeli helicopters landing at the site to evacuate the dead and wounded.

Separately, the Martyr Omar Qassim Forces, the military wing of the Democratic Front, announced that on August 18, its fighters detonated a pre-planted explosive device against an Israeli armored personnel carrier in the al-Zaytoun district of southern Gaza City.

Israel halt aid in north Gaza
as it expands offensive

With the humanitarian crisis already hitting catastrophic levels, any such halt will spell disaster for the Palestinians

Israel is preparing to severely reduce the already meager humanitarian aid deliveries into northern Gaza as its military intensifies operations in the area, according to an official source cited by AP on Saturday. The move comes just a day after Israel declared Gaza City a combat zone.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that airdrops over Gaza City will be suspended in the coming days, while the number of aid trucks entering northern Gaza will be reduced. The measure is part of preparations to forcibly displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians further south.

On Friday, Israel ended daytime pauses that had been temporarily allowing limited aid delivery, while describing Gaza City as a "Hamas stronghold". Despite previous large-scale raids, Israel insists that tunnels remain operational there.

UN, Red Cross warn of catastrophic consequences

In recent days, Israel’s military has intensified bombardments around Gaza City, where international food security experts recently confirmed famine conditions.

Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, warned that forced evacuations of Gaza City would lead to “massive population movement that no area in the Gaza Strip can absorb,” citing the collapse of infrastructure and severe shortages of food, water, shelter, and medical supplies.

“It is impossible that such an evacuation could be conducted in a safe and dignified manner,” she said.

Previous warnings by the United Nations have stressed that these aid measures fall far short of the minimum 600 trucks required daily to meet basic needs in Gaza.

Hundreds of families have already begun fleeing Gaza City, carrying their belongings on carts and pickup trucks. Many have been displaced multiple times since the beginning of the war.

“There is no food and even water is not available. When it is available, it is unsafe to drink,” Amer Zayed, a displaced resident in Deir al-Balah, told AP. “The suffering gets worse when more people are forced to move here.”

Mounting death toll

Health officials at Al-Awda Hospital reported that four Palestinians were killed Saturday by Israeli gunfire as they tried to reach aid in central Gaza. Gaza’s Health Ministry said 15 people were killed and more than 200 were injured in similar incidents within 24 hours.

The Ministry also confirmed that 10 Palestinians, including three children, died from starvation and malnutrition over the same period. Since the beginning of the war, at least 332 Palestinians, including 124 children, have lost their lives due to hunger-related causes.

The overall Palestinian death toll in Gaza has now surpassed 63,371, according to the Health Ministry, which reports that more than half of the casualties are women and children.

80 Palestinians martyred
in Gaza since dawn

At least 62 Palestinians were killed in the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, as occupation forces bombed homes, targeted aid seekers, and struck tents sheltering displaced civilians

Al Mayadeen’s correspondent in Gaza reported that at least 80 Palestinians have been martyred since dawn on Sunday as Israel's atrocities continue devastating the Gaza Strip.

Occupation forces opened fire on Palestinians waiting for aid in the Sudaniya area in the northwest of the Strip, injuring several civilians. In the south, 38 Palestinians waiting for aid were also killed in similar attacks by the IOF
According to our correspondent, Israeli aircraft destroyed four houses in the Sabra neighborhood south of Gaza City within one hour. Two more homes in the same neighborhood were also struck despite being inhabited. One civilian was killed and several others were injured.

Earlier raids on the Sabra neighborhood left widespread destruction and further injuries among residents.

In the town of Bani Suhaila, east of Khan Younis, an Israeli airstrike on a house killed one Palestinian. The southern Gaza Strip has witnessed intensified bombardment as part of the latest escalation.

Displaced civilians attacked, bombarded

Civilians displaced from their homes also came under attack when occupation aircraft bombed tents sheltering families near the Salah al-Din school in the al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City.

The strike caused a number of injuries among displaced persons already suffering under dire humanitarian conditions.

The latest aggression adds to the mounting civilian toll as bombardment continues to target residential neighborhoods, aid seekers, and shelters for the displaced across the besieged Strip.

It is worth noting that the occupation continues to escalate its attacks using explosive drones capable of releasing 15 hand grenades simultaneously, specifically targeting residential areas and civilians.

According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, the Israeli military has detonated more than 80 booby-trapped robots in densely populated neighborhoods, inflicting further casualties and destruction.

Gaza death toll nears 64,000

The Ministry of Health confirmed that the overall death toll from the ongoing Israeli aggression has risen to 63,459 martyrs, with 160,256 injuries recorded since the beginning of the war on October 7, 2023. Between March 18, 2025, and today, 11,328 martyrs and 48,215 injuries have been recorded.

As part of the ongoing assaults on Palestinians seeking humanitarian aid, 30 martyrs and 166 injuries were recorded in the last 24 hours alone. This brings the total number of martyrs targeted while trying to access aid, referred to as "martyrs of livelihood," to 2,248, with more than 16,600 injured.

Gaza hospitals also recorded seven new famine-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths due to hunger and malnutrition to 339, including 124 children.

Israel’s Gaza campaign meets
UN definition of Genocide

The International Association of Genocide Scholars has declared that Israel’s actions in Gaza meet the UN definition of genocide, urging the international community to act

The world’s leading association of genocide experts has passed a resolution on the genocide in Gaza, declaring that Israel’s military campaign in the Strip meets the legal definition of genocide under international law.

86% of voting members of the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) supported the resolution, which states, Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide in Article II of the United Nations Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948)
The resolution comes as Israel faces a separate ICJ Gaza genocide case at The Hague, brought by South Africa. While Israel claims its campaign is self-defense, critics argue its systematic targeting of civilians, destruction of homes, and deprivation of aid and food amount to genocidal acts.

Israel’s genocide has killed an estimated 63,000 Palestinians, displaced nearly the entire population, and devastated most of Gaza’s infrastructure.

Humanitarian impact on Palestinians

The IAGS resolution lists numerous actions that meet the threshold of genocide, such as "deliberate attacks against civilians, including children; starvation; deprivation of humanitarian aid, water, and fuel; sexual and reproductive violence; and forced displacement."

These conditions, coupled with widespread destruction, underscore the severity of the crisis. The humanitarian toll reflects not only mass civilian deaths but also ongoing Palestinian famine and displacement.

Hamas welcomed the declaration, with spokesperson Ismail al-Thawabta calling it a reinforcement of “documented evidence and facts presented before international courts.” He added that the decision places a “legal and moral obligation” on the international community to act.

Melanie O’Brien, IAGS president and professor of international law at the University of Western Australia, said, “This is a definitive statement from experts in the field of genocide studies that what is going on on the ground in Gaza is genocide.”

Other scholars stressed its significance. Sergey Vasiliev of the Open University in the Netherlands noted that the genocide determination “has become mainstream within academia, particularly in the field of genocide studies.”

The Gaza Ministry of Health said on Monday that the overall death toll from the ongoing Israeli aggression has risen to 63,557 martyrs and 160,660 injuries. Between March 18, 2025, and today, 11,426 people have been killed and 48,619 injured, have been recorded.

IOF raid over 150 homes in West Bank
amid mass arrest campaign

Israeli occupation forces raided dozens of towns across the West Bank, arresting citizens, demolishing homes in occupied al-Quds, and intensifying the siege on Tulkarm

Early Tuesday, Israeli occupation forces carried out a wide-scale military operation targeting multiple areas across the occupied West Bank, including the village of Kafr Qalil, east of Nablus, where more than 10 citizens were arrested and over 150 homes raided, according to field sources.

The raid on Kafr Qalil began around 1:00 a.m., as occupation vehicles stormed the village from several directions. Homes were violently searched, and a citizen was assaulted, sustaining bruises that required hospitalization. The forces also stormed the village cemetery and imposed a curfew on residents.

Settler violence also continued in several areas. In the village of Deir Sharaf, west of Nablus, a Palestinian was injured after being attacked by settlers while working on his agricultural land.

Settlers also stormed the towns of Kisan and Tuqu in Beit Lahm, attacking citizens’ homes and launching a drone over the area, increasing tension and fear among local residents.

IOF demolish homes in occupied al-Quds

In occupied al-Quds, Israeli occupation forces began demolishing Palestinian homes in the town of Anata, northeast of the city. Two Palestinian youths were also arrested in the Ras al-Amud neighborhood of Silwan.

Arrest campaigns expanded to other areas, including the towns of Tal, Asira al-Shamaliya, and Qusra in Nablus; as well as Jenin, Qalqilya, the Dheisheh refugee camp in Beit Lahm, and the town of Bala, east of Tulkarm. Dozens of homes and shops were raided, with citizens detained and subjected to field interrogation.

The latest escalation comes amid the continued sieges on the city of Tulkarm and its two refugee camps, which have now entered their 219th consecutive day. The occupation’s campaign has severely restricted movement, impacted access to medical care, and intensified pressure on the local population.

Israeli settlers storm al-Aqsa compound, IOF detain al-Khalil mayor

Earlier today, Israeli settlers, under the protection of the Israeli police, stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied city of al-Quds, entering in groups through the Mughrabi Gate, where dozens of settlers performed Talmudic rituals in the mosque's courtyards and carried out provocative tours.

Meanwhile, Israeli occupation forces arrested the mayor of al-Khalil, Tayseer Abu Sneineh, on Tuesday, as part of a widespread raid campaign across various areas in the governorate.

The forces raided the mayor's home in al-Khalil, searched it after breaking down its doors and rummaging through its contents, and then arrested him and took him to an unknown location, leaving significant damage in their wake.

21,000 Gaza children disabled

A UN committee reports that Israel's war on Gaza has left over 21,000 children disabled, with aid restrictions and inaccessible evacuations worsening conditions for people with disabilities

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) has sounded the alarm over a growing disability crisis in Gaza, reporting that the ongoing conflict has left tens of thousands of children permanently injured.

Since the outbreak of war on October 7, 2023, more than 40,500 children have sustained new injuries, and over half of them are now living with disabilities. "There are at least 21,000 children with disabilities in Gaza as a result of impairments acquired since October 7, 2023," the committee said.

The committee raised concerns that evacuation instructions issued during Israeli military operations were "often inaccessible" to people with hearing or visual impairments, rendering escape "impossible." "Reports also described people with disabilities being forced to flee in unsafe and undignified conditions, such as crawling through sand or mud without mobility assistance," it added.

Aid Restrictions and Shrinking Distribution

The humanitarian response has deteriorated sharply. What was once a UN-led system with nearly 400 distribution points has been replaced by a private US- and "Israel"-backed initiative operating only four centers across Gaza. Many residents are unable to reach these locations due to destroyed infrastructure, debris, or the loss of mobility aids.

"People with disabilities faced severe disruptions in assistance, leaving many without food, clean water, or sanitation and dependent on others for survival," the committee warned.

The report noted that 83 percent of disabled people had lost their mobility devices, with wheelchairs, crutches, splints, and prosthetics largely unavailable. These items remain blocked from entering Gaza as "Israel" classifies them as "dual-use" materials, a designation that excludes them from humanitarian shipments.

Call for Urgent Protection and Aid

Between October 2023 and August 2025, at least 157,114 people were injured in Gaza, with more than a quarter at risk of lifelong impairments, according to the committee. It called for "massive humanitarian aid to persons with disabilities" and urged all parties to adopt measures to prevent "further violence, harm, deaths, and deprivation of rights."

The review also pressed "Israel" to ensure evacuation plans take into account the needs of disabled people and to guarantee that those displaced are able to "return safely to their homes and are assisted in doing so."

Wider Humanitarian Concerns

Independent medical and humanitarian organizations have reported parallel findings: children now make up a significant proportion of Gaza’s amputees and trauma patients, with hospitals overwhelmed by blast injuries.

Thousands of young amputees face little access to rehabilitation or prosthetics, and only a fraction of medical needs are being met as Gaza’s health system buckles under shortages of supplies and staff.

Rights groups further warn that people with disabilities face multiple layers of hardship, limited access to education, healthcare, and aid, alongside heightened risks during forced displacement. Many who lost their assistive devices in bombardments or rubble remain effectively stranded, dependent on others for survival.
