Over 47,000 Iraqis Left Turkey
for Europe in 2024
The Turkish Statistical Institute announced on Saturday that more than 47,000 Iraqis emigrated from Turkey to European countries in 2024, highlighting ongoing migration trends among Iraqis seeking better opportunities abroad
According to the institute’s annual data release, a total of 47,517 Iraqis left Turkey last year, marking a notable decrease compared to 2023, when 66,300 Iraqis emigrated.
Meanwhile, 5,964 Iraqis immigrated to Turkey during the same period, including 3,062 men and 2,872 women.
The data also showed that Iraqis ranked first among nationalities leaving Turkey in the highest numbers in 2024, followed by Afghans and then Russians.
Turkey has long been a key transit and host country for migrants from the Middle East, Asia, and beyond, including large numbers of Iraqis fleeing conflict, instability, or economic hardship.
Many Iraqis use Turkey as a temporary stop before attempting to reach Europe through irregular migration routes or resettlement programs.
Political instability, security concerns, and limited economic opportunities in Iraq have fuelled migration waves over the past two decades.
Despite the decrease in the number of Iraqis leaving Turkey last year, the country remains a central hub for migration networks, with Europe continuing to be a primary destination for many Iraqis seeking safety and a more stable future.
