YRA calls for release of detained
journalist Hassan Zaza
The Free Media Union (YRA) condemned the so-called "Public Security" forces affiliated with the Syrian Transitional Government for detaining journalist Hassan Zaza, demanding his immediate release and clarity on his fate
The YRA strongly denounced the arrest of journalist and member of the Union’s General Council in Syria, as well as representative of the International Federation of Arab Journalists, Mr. Hassan Zaza. He was taken from his home to an unknown location under mysterious circumstances without any explanation for his detention.
In a statement issued today, Saturday (June 28, 2025), the Union emphasized that the detention of colleague Hassan Zaza constitutes a blatant violation of press freedom and journalists’ rights.
It called on the relevant authorities to immediately disclose his fate and release him unconditionally, urging them to fulfill their responsibilities in protecting journalists and ensuring a safe environment for them to carry out their duty of reporting the truth.
The YRA also called on international organizations concerned with protecting journalists and humanitarian organizations to take urgent action to uncover Hassan Zaza’s fate and work to stop violations against journalists in Syria. It warned that the continuation of such practices threatens the safety and security of all media workers.
The YRA concluded its statement by renewing its full solidarity with journalist Hassan Zaza and all journalists facing harassment and violations, demanding that the Syrian Transitional Government cease pressuring journalists and immediately release colleague Zaza.
