Said Nursi, the Kurdish scholar
poisoned by Atatürk's regime!
Said Nursi was born in 1877 in the village of Nurs in northern Kurdistan. He was an influential intellectual and writer during the final years of the Ottoman Empire and the early Turkish Republic
During Atatürk's takeover, Nursi refused to pledge allegiance to the new secular state. He opposed the political and ideological changes that the Turkish regime was trying to enforce - especially the harsh centralization, nationalization and politics aimed at erasing the cultural identity of minorities.
In response, Nursi was subjected to severe persecution. He was imprisoned on several occasions, put in isolation and exiled to different parts of the country. In 1960 he died under unclear circumstances, after a sudden deterioration in health.
According to several sources, he was poisoned, which points to a planned execution by the state. Shortly afterwards, the Turkish government moved his grave in secret, fearing the site would become a symbolic gathering point.
Said Nursi's fate is a stark reminder of how intellectual and independent voices are often silenced in totalitarian systems
Especially when they refuse to bow to power
