Zagros means Birth of the Sun, which is why Kurds are called Children of the Sun because the earliest Kurds lived in the Zagros Mountains

Historical Importance and First Settlements

The Zagros Mountains have been home to human settlements since the Paleolithic Age.

In particular, remains from the Upper Paleolithic and Epipaleolithic periods have been found in the caves of Kermanshah and Khurramabad. Settlements such as Qalata Çermok (Suleymaniye), Girê Buran (Loristan), Girê Sarab and Ganjara (Kermanshah), which date back to 11 thousand BC, bear traces of the culture of the first civilization that developed in the Zagros system.

Birth of Agriculture: The Zagros Mountains are one of the important centers where the Neolithic Revolution (Agricultural Revolution) began.

Approximately 12 thousand years ago, the first examples of agriculture and settled life appeared in this region. This situation formed the basis of the transition from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to agriculture and animal husbandry.
Language and Culture: Studies show that the Zagros Mountains were the birthplace and formation of the Aryan language culture, which dates back to 15 thousand BC. This language culture later spread in waves to surrounding areas.
