TEHRAN, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- An Iranian border guard was killed by Kurdish rebels in northwestern Iran, official IRNA news agency reported on Thursday.

The report said that the guard was killed by the terrorist group of the Party for Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), the offshoot of the outlawed Turkish Kurdish Workers Party (PKK), in Maku region in Iran's West Azerbaijan province bordering Turkey.

Governor of Maku, Hamid Ahmadian, said that the border guard was a member of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), according to the report.

He was killed when PJAK terrorists attacked a border post to penetrate into the Iranian soil, said Ahmadian, adding that the terrorists were repelled by the IRGC troops.

On Sunday, a local commander of the IRGC said three members of the PJAK terrorist group were killed in clashes in the western Iranian Kurdistan province outside Baneh town near the Iranian- Iraqi border, according to Press TV.

The commander said the Iranian guards shot dead three PJAK terrorists and arrested three others.

Earlier in October, PJAK members killed six Iranian security forces during an ambush in the same region.
