KRG condemns PKK strike on key oil pipeline

PostAuthor: Piling » Sat Aug 01, 2015 8:57 am

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Friday harshly condemned the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attack on the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline, which transports crude from the Kurdistan Region to Turkey.

In a statement, the KRG cabinet condemned the PKK's recent attack on the Kurdistan oil pipeline in Sirnak in the southeast of Turkey. It described the attack an attempt to discredit Kurdish people in the Kurdistan region.

“Baghdad budget impasse and ongoing fight against Islamic State (ISIS) have impoverished Kurdish people and KRG in Kurdistan. This oil pipeline is the only source of the livelihood of people in Kurdistan region and more than 1.8 million refugee and IDPs in the region,” the statement read.

The KRG statement identified the Ceyhan pipeline as the major source to a resource-constrained region of Kurdistan and described the pipeline crucial source for Peshmerga that is battling the terror group of ISIS.

A similar attack targeted the Turkey-Iran natural gas pipeline on Tuesday in Agri, a Kurdish province of Turkey on the border with Iran.

On Wednesday, the official website of the armed wing of the PKK in Turkey, the People’s Protection Forces (HPG), claimed its forces had carried out a sabotage operation against the pipeline in the area between Silopi and the Cizre district, both in Sirnak, where the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline passes.

Bombing this pipeline is more harmful for Iraqi Kurds than for Turks. That is really an underhand and devious attack to KRG, a stab in the back from PKK and its Iranian ally.

Throughout the years the PKK have attacked oil pipelines on numerous occasions

Pipelines are easy targets - also attacks on pipelines never go unnoticed unlike many of the other PKK activities

PKK want publicity - they want to wake people up to what is happening

Why does the entire world deem it to be wrong for Kurds - living under a Turkish army of occupation - to want independence

In recent years - throughout the world - a great many indigenous peoples have gained independence

The dreadful reality is that Kurds - who have been the frontrunners in the fight against the Islamic State - now risk being suppressed even further as Turkey watches growing Kurdish strength and unity within Syria

Today, Barzani called the PKK to leave KRG and the mountains, because their presence endangers civilian lives in Kurdish villages.

I doubt that the PKK will agree, they will howl to treason.

Where else could they go?

I am not sure if really they knew or not the pipeline belonged to Kurdistan but I can say they don't seem politically mature enough. After the car bomb attack on the Kurdish city of prsus in North Kurdistan near Kobane in West Kurdistan, they killed two officers. This was a serious mistake. This gave Turkey the excuse to attack them. Before that they had developed a good reputation in the west for their fight against ISIS but now they damaged this reputation and gave excuse to Turkey to attack them.

The attack which killed those 2 police officers was not, as many think, an isolated and unprovoked attack

As a result of Turkish continued encroachment of Kurdish land, the Turkish military and the PKK have had many scuffles and minor conflicts within the Kurdish region over recent years, most of that is Turkish military beating up Kurds X( and obviously not viewed as newsworthy by the media.

If PKK restarts the war, the next time that Kobanî or other Kurdish canton in Syria is threatened, neither Coalition nor KRG could intervene to help YPG. That's not really the good agenda.

But a military wing of PKK has no interests to the Peace Process, so that is also an internal fight against Political and Bellicist elements.

PKK attacks Turkey's halted Shah Deniz gas pipeline
(not very good at selecting targets are they =)) )

ANKARA (Reuters) - Kurdish militants attacked Turkey's Shah Deniz pipeline carrying natural gas from Azerbaijan early on Tuesday, but the blast did not impact supply as flow had already been halted for maintenance, the energy minister said on Tuesday.

The blast came days after another attack by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) halted flows along a pipeline carrying crude oil to Turkey from Iraq.

"With last night's attack, the separatist terror organisation (PKK) has once again shown that they aim to prevent our people from accessing their most basic needs," Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said in an e-mailed statement.

The explosion on the Shah Deniz pipeline took place in Turkey's Posof province near the border with Georgia early on Tuesday.

Britain's BP said on Monday it had suspended operations on the Shah Deniz platform in the Caspian Sea as well as the Shah Deniz facility inside the Sangachal terminal for planned maintenance from Aug. 2.

Shah Deniz, Azerbaijan's biggest gas field, is being developed by partners including BP, Norway's Statoil, Azeri state energy company SOCAR and others.

There has been a surge in violence by the PKK against Turkish security forces and infrastructure since mid-July. Turkey launched reciprocal air strikes against PKK camps in northern Iraq on July 24.
