KDP plans visit with parties to reactivate Kurdistan Parliament
The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) will visit the Kurdish political parties in an effort to reactivate the Kurdistan Parliament, Omed Khoshnaw head of the KDP faction said on Monday (May 23).
The region’s parliament has been in recess since Speaker Mohammed, a Gorran party member, was blocked from entering the Region’s capital city of Erbil on October 12.
Senior officials of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) have accused Gorran of orchestrating attacks on its party headquarters during demonstrations that turned violent last fall. However, Gorran officials refused they have been behind the attacks.
Speaking to NRT head of KDP fraction in the Kurdistan Parliament, Khoshnaw said increased attempts are underway by his party to reactivate parliament and they will visit other parties in a near future.
“We are insistent on our previous condition that for parliament reactivation the parliament leadership has to be canceled,” Khoshnaw said.
He declined to give comments over an agreement that recently reached between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Change Movement (Gorran), saying “We attempt to resolve issues in the parliament.”
The Kurdistan Region is currently facing a political crisis as well after the five major Kurdish political parties failed to reach an agreement on the presidency issue last October, which resulted in Parliament Speaker Yousif Mohammed being blocked from entering Erbil, where the parliament building is located.
