First olive oil refinery opened in Iraqi Kurdistan
HEWLÊR-Erbil, Iraq’s Kurdistan region,— An olive oil production refinery was officially opened in the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, Erbil, for the first time on Tuesday.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Abdul Star Majid, who opened the refinery on Tuesday, said leftovers from the product will be used in the creation of soaps.
While the refinery was officially opened on Tuesday, the factory began producing olive oil in Erbil as early as November 2016, with up to 115 tons of olives brought to the refinery from different parts of the region.
The creation of the refinery came from an agreement between the Kurdistan Region and Italy to develop olive products in the region.
