Renowned Kurdish film director Taha Karimi died in a tragic accident on Wednesday 29th May. Taha directed several films, including ‘Storm’, ‘Border Life’ and ‘White Mountains’ and his contribution to the nascent Kurdish film industry was outstanding.

Taha’s films were screened at international festivals in India, Dubai, Germany and Italy.

He was working on his latest, One Thousand and One Apples’, a film about the Anfal tragedy.

This is a huge loss to the Kurdish film industry which need more people of Taha’s calibre.

Kurdish director Taha Karimi died in a road accident in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq on Wednesday. He was 37.

His body was transferred to Iran on Thursday, and he was buried at the Soleiman-Beg Cemetery in his hometown Baneh, Kordestan Province, on Friday, his publicist Mansur Jahani announced in a press release.

Jahani gave no details about the accident.

His funeral was attended by director/actor Qotbeddin Sadeqi, who starred in Karimi’s “The Qandil Mountains”, and Keyvan Yusefi, the cinematographer of the film.

He was a cinema graduate of Tehran’s University of Art.

He directed several films, most of which focus on the life of Kurdish people in the region. He has resided in Sulaymaniyah since two years ago.

“I Am a White Mercenary” was his latest film, which is about Saeid Jaf, who claims to be a ‘Kurdish Schindler’ responsible for saving thousands of Kurds during Saddam Hussein’s infamous Al Anfal genocide in 1988.

His credits also include “Oil, the Cancer of My City”, and “White Mountains”.
