Today's Zaman

The real question

I assume everybody easily understands the motive behind reporting a statement today made by Abdullah Öcalan 15 years ago that he “wants to serve the state” as though it were a new development.

So I will not dwell on it. What really surprises me is the insularity of those who pin their hopes on re-reporting the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader's statement. They believe that a previous attempt by Öcalan to cooperate with the Turkish state to put out the [terrorism] fire will have a negative impact on the Kurdish people and that the Kurds will deny the leadership of Öcalan and will give up on the ongoing settlement process.

What crosses the minds of Kurds after reading Öcalan's statement about possible cooperation with the Turkish state is: So, what happened then? What did his interlocutors say and do when Öcalan said in 1999 that he “may end the armed clashes if the Turkish state helps him and if he has the power to do so”? Why didn't they allow Öcalan at the time to play the role he is playing now?

What a scoop. He has always said that, even when he was in Syria.

I have never understood why so many people have continued to follow him - even after it is so obvious that he has betrayed them :-o

He has not betrayed any one. He has a heavy burden on his shoulder. He is trying to tame and control a released mad bull in a china shop. He has already almost succeeded. Turkey has recognised it never can defeat Kurds, PKK, by force. That is way it has changed their attitude
towards Kurds completely and given up their hostility towards Kurds.

You have to remember armed struggle for liberation is only a small and easy part to trigger the idea and force to prove your self. The rest of the struggle to complete it is intellectual, political, which is the hardest part of it. Only someone with Iron mind, spirit and body can handle it.

By stating that he does not want Kurds to have independence - Ocalan has betrayed all those many freedom fighters who fought and died for the freedom and independence Ocalan once promised

The avatar I now use - is one that was designed by a freedom fighter friend of mine who has disappeared forever - he was an extremely proud Kurd who left his family to fight for the right of his children to be Kurds and live in an Independent Kurdistan

Ocalan has denied them that right !

I personally do not believe in violence - we all know that Kurds want independence - yet never once has Ocalan allowed the Kurds inside Turkey the opportunity to have a referendum and provide any real proof that would have helped them gain that freedom - the PKK have a vast worldwide network of support - yet that network has seldom been used for anything positive

Not once has Ocalan held the coordinated worldwide protests that PKK were capable of organising - in fact the PKK and it's baby organise rubbish protests to appease the Kurds and give the impression they are doing something - but they have never once made a concerted effort to protest worldwide for independence

Iron mind, spirit and body can handle it

As soon as he was arrested he pledged his love and support for the Turkish state - the man is a COWARD

I am far from being the only person not happy with Ocalan's love of Turkey - I remember all the Kurdish leaders who were shocked at Ocalan's pro-Turkish stance when he was arrested

Why do you think every thing depends on Apo and hew has to approve it? If people of North Kurdistan wanted referendum, why they needed to get approval from Apo? He is not a God on Kurds, is he? Kurds of NK don't need his approval whatsoever in whatever they want.

Sadly a great many Kurds do seem to look upon Ocalan as God - many look on Ocalan as liberating - whereas recent events have shown him to be anything but liberating - he is in fact helping the Turkish government to suppress Kurds

To organise a referendum takes a lot of groundwork - those who are currently trying to hold a referendum are running into trouble - there are no strong non-PKK connect groups within Turkey that are willing or able to organise such a referendum - in now appears that for securing reasons it will have to be organised from Europe
