A group of militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fired at the Turkish Karaçalı military base today between 12:05 and 12:30 a.m., in the southeastern province of Şırnak near the Turkish-Iraqi border, Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) said in a statement.

A gendarmerie specialized sergeant was slightly injured after the fire ricocheted off stones on the ground. The statement added that air reconnaissance operations had been conducted to the area for self defense.

Turkish army examines PKK points in northern Iraq

TSK have conducted air reconnaissance operations to 62 points in northern Iraq in order to discover the PKK targets, according to a written statement released earlier today on the army’s website.

Pictures of the targets were also been captured from the air during the operations, the statement said adding that their evaluation has already been started.

Turkey continues its peace process as the PKK militants are leaving the country on orders from Abdullah Öcalan, the PKK’s jailed leader, who sent his orders through letters delivered by BDP MPs who visited him.

ISTANBUL, June 3 (Reuters) – Kurdish militants opened fire on Turkish troops in southeast Turkey near the border with Iraq on Monday, slightly wounding one soldier, the military said, the first such incident since the rebels began withdrawing from Turkey under a peace process.

There were two bursts of gunfire in Uludere in Sirnak province just after noon (0900 GMT) and a Turkish Cobra attack helicopter was subsequently dispatched to the area, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement.

Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrillas began leaving Turkish territory in small groups nearly a month ago in a bid to end a conflict which has killed more than 40,000 people in nearly 30 years of fighting.

They are withdrawing to northern Iraq, where several thousand of their fighters are based, under a plan agreed by jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan and Turkish officials.

“A group of terrorists opened fire and, as a result of the shooting, one gendarmerie sergeant was slightly wounded by the one of the stones ricocheting off the ground,” the army said.

The PKK, deemed a terrorist group by the US, the EU and Turkey, was not immediately available for comment.

The peace plan is a gamble for Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan who could face a nationalist backlash before elections next year. Opinion polls currently show a high level of public support for the process.

However, a wave of violent anti-government protests in Turkey has complicated the government’s efforts to push ahead with reforms which Ocalan and the PKK are demanding before eventual disarmament.

Mr Erdogan previously demanded the rebels disarm before leaving but the PKK rejected this, fearing they could come under attack as they did in a previous pullback. The PKK has warned it will retaliate if the Turkish army launches operation against them.

I firmly believe that the PKK should have demanded that more reforms take place BEFORE adhering to the cease-fire

I also believe that the PKK should NEVER have agreed to leave Turkey

And, as I stated elsewhere, I am NOT happy that Turkey has started defining and taking pictures of PKK targets in South Kurdistan

What crime did the PKK commit ?

For the most part it defended innocent Kurds from the torture and murders of the savage Turkish army of occupation, and the forced assimilation and Turkification of 25 MILLION Kurds

It was not PKK, it was Turkish Security forces opened fire on Turkish Security posts as a plan to blame PKK to harm peace process. Some ten or more years ago a ceasefire agreed between PKK and Turkish Government. To undermine this ceasefire Turkish Security Forces killed 20 unarmed Turkish soldiers on leave and accused PKK doing it.

If Turkey reformed to become a real democratic country NK will become in a position like Scotland in UK. This will come about if old retarded kemalist Turks prevented to come back to power in future elections in Turkey.

It might be also a 'tricky attempt' from pro-war, especially when Erdogan has to face a revolt in the West, in the way to weaken him more and ruin his 'Kurdish policy'. There are many supporters of CHP inside Turkish forces.

I am inclined to agree with both Londoner and Piling.

I know what Turkey has done in the past - other countries have done the same - some getting their normal troops to disguise themselves as insurgents and attack and even KILL their own forces

Now that Turkey has taken the trouble to identify PKK targets inside South Kurdistan, perhaps they are trying to invent a reason to attack those targets
