Alcatel-Lucent has confirmed that it has completed work on the deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology for Regional Telecom, a mobile operator based in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. The rollout has enabled the operator to become the first company in Iraq to launch the 4G technology on a commercial basis. According to Alca-Lu services will be offered under the ‘Fastlink’ brand.
While details regarding Regional Telecom’s background remain sketchy, it is assumed that the company is affiliated to Newroz Telecom, in light of the fact that the two businesses share a CEO in the form of Kawa A Junad. On account of its geographic location, Newroz is answerable not to Iraq’s Communications and Media Commission (CMC), but to the Kurdish regulator, the Ministry of Communications (MoC KRG).
