In 1988 a chemical attack on the Kurdish city of Halabja in northern Iraq killed 5000 people and injured some 10000 others.
Saddam Hussein ordered the attack as part of a scorched-earth campaign to crush a Kurdish rebellion in the north of the country.
On Monday lawyers in Paris filed a criminal complaint against the Western companies they believe were legally responsible for supplying the gases that were used.
