The current political divide in the Kurdish Parliament has the potential to cause tension and instability in the Kurdistan region. This is why the most appropriate mechanism to squelch these issues, and preserve stability and security in the region, is to extend the presidency of Massoud Barzani.
He is the most suitable candidate for the position, because he is a historic Kurdish personality and the respect he garners could be a binding factor for Kurdish society.
The opposition’s argument is a valid argument and might be based on facts and figures, but it does not mean the sovereignty of the people and the region is compromised.
There will always have to be an individual, or power, that must pump the brakes to bring stability in the region, and the current man for that job is Barzani.
I believe he is the only man with a legitimate personality among the Kurds to achieve the quieting of the current political turmoil.
The Goran Movement and the Islamic Brotherhood should bear in mind that Kurdistan is not yet an official democratic state like Israel, the only democratic state in the Middle East.
To shout for a democratic system is protocol and normal for parliament, but the Kurdish opposition movements must realize they still have a lot to learn when it comes to democracy.
The Kurdistan region is quite fragile. Its relative peace and prosperity sits in the middle of a metaphorical mine field, with sectarian violence spreading throughout Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey.
It’s imperative that the Kurdistan region be protected by wise people and not those who are trying to sabotage the whole Kurdish identity and the dream of statehood.
As a Kurdish Diaspora and a business man, I suggest we embrace Barzani’s extended term during this time of uncertainty. He is the only president for Kurdistan currently and should be considered the “Kurdish King”, until the region gains its declaration as a state.
Opposition movements come and go, it’s a historic fact. And it’s in my humble opinion that these current movements, like the Goran movement and the Islamic Brotherhood won’t last, as the Kurdish democratic process moves forward.
The facts of the opposition are right to some extent, but we must take caution and consider the source of those facts.
Kurdistan’s opposition movements should not waste their time, because there is no other current leader who can fill Barzani’s shoes as president.
We should honor our legendary leader and be humble in the fact that we have an individual who fervently fights for his people.
