In the first six months of 2013, the Kirkuk court granted 1,725 divorces while recording 2,995 marriages making the numbers of the divorces more than half that of the marriages.
The numbers of the divorces increased dramatically, according to a source for Kirkuk court, and he described the situation as “terrifying.”
Amjad Muhammad, a lawyer at the Kirkuk court told Kirkuk Now “The increase in the number of the divorces is due to a lack of social awareness and understanding between the couples when they face particular issues.”
“The increasing of weapon possession by civilians and a lack of rules and regulations to prevent violence against women has contributed to social issues and an increase in the divorce rates,” Amjad stated.
The numbers are dramatically high compared to the past year, as there were 6,547 marriages in 2012 compared to 1,646 divorces.

Amjad Muhamad attributed the issue to the fast decision making in the marriage process, saying that “Our youths think marriage is only wearing the bride and groom costumes.”
He added, “The cases are mostly a misunderstanding, bad usage of the internet and communication process and its effects on the society.”
Naznaz Omer, a social researcher said, “This is a dangerous alert, the media and women’s organizations should act on their role in this process.” She added, “The media should make conferences on such a subject to investigate the cases and find a solution.”
She said one of the reasons is under age marriage, where the couples marry each other sooner than they should.
