A Syrian Catholic prelate has told that Fides news agency that he opposes a proposal to make northeastern Syria an autonomous Kurdish region. “The only ones who want to create a Kurdish autonomous region in northern Syria are the militants of the PKK [Kurdistan Workers’ Party],” said Archbishop Jacques Behnan Hindo of Hassaké-Nisibi. “The project does not even receive acclaim from other Kurds, even less by Muslim tribes and us Christians.” The United States and several other nations have designated the PKK, which is based in Turkey, as a terrorist organization. “In this area of Syria, the PKK Kurdish militias are holding a clash with Islamist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda,” said Archbishop Hindo.
