The Patriotic Union and the Kurdistan Democratic Party have enjoyed a powerful coalition for ten years. But the Patriotic Union was relegated to third place in September’s election. The Democratic Party seems to want to continue the partnership. Opposition MPs say the Patriotic Union could be making demands on the Democratic Party.
Haji Karwan also believes a broad-based cabinet would help the Kurdistan Region deal with internal and regional political changes that are expected in the coming years. But the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party says the Patriotic Union should not tie its future to opposition parties.
A decision on the new cabinet is expected within the next month.
Officials from the Patriotic Union also say that their strategic agreement with the Democratic Party is unfair and disadvantages their party. But the agreement would likely be cancelled if the main opposition parties join the new cabinet. A cabinet that includes the opposition could weaken the Democratic Party’s power.
