Til Koçer border post seized by YPG

The unstoppable Kurdish lions of Rojava have taken a very important border crossing. This could be a game changer from now on.

YPG (People's Defense Units) have seized the Til Koçer border post on the frontier with Iraq early on Saturday, according to reports coming through. The border point was seized after three days of clashes with an al Qaeda-linked group which had held the crossing since March.

YPG told Reuters fighting carried on through the morning and a senior security official on the Iraqi side of the crossing said he could hear gunshots, mortar fire and shelling.

The Yarubiya post and surrounding areas in the northeast were taken from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant rebel group, who had seized it from the army, The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—The spokesman for the Kurdish People’s Defense Units (YPG) said Saturday morning that they have driven out Islamist rebels and are now in control of Tel Kocer (Yarubiyah) on the Syria-Iraq Border.

YPG spokesman Redur Xelil told Rudaw that after some fierce fighting with the rebels of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the Jabhat al-Nusrah, their forces are now running the border town.

Tel Kocer is located east of Qamishli—the largest Kurdish city in Syria—and is home to a mix of Kurdish-Arab population.

According to Xelil, YPG fighters have been engaged in separate battles with the al-Nusrah group and the ISIL in the past few days in Tel Kocer.

The YPG is the armed wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the dominant Kurdish party in Syria.
