The Kurdistan Region has closed its borders following a large influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) fleeing violence in Mosul. Makeshift camps will be built in Khazer, on the border between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
The Mayor of Khabat Rizgar Qadir, the district between Erbil and Mosul told BasNews the camps will be opened between Khazer and Khabat district, and accommodations will be provided for the IDPs.
“This will ensure that the refugees don’t come into Erbil, the city’s borders will be closed,” said Qadir.
BasNews was informed that Nawzad Hadi, the Governor of Erbil is on his way to the meet the IDPs and inform them of the Kurdish government’s plan.
Thousands have fled Mosul following the outbreak in violence sparked by the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS). A number of reports claim that among the IDPs are former prisoners who broke out of Mosul jail.
