Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism foils ISIS attacks in Kirkuk
The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) announced the arrest of several Islamic State (ISIS) members who were planning an attack in the city of Kirkuk.
The KRSC in a statement on Tuesday stated that in an intelligence operation, the KRSC’s Directorate of Counter-Terrorism forces arrested a group of six ISIS extremists in the village of Bajwan, west of Kirkuk.
The operation was part of the continued efforts to arrest Da’esh, the Arabic acronym for ISIS, terror group and foil their plans to attack Kirkuk and the surrounding areas, the statement added.
“On the night of January 30, the Directorate of Counter-Terrorism forces was able to identify and arrest six members of the group who are convicted of perpetrating several terror attacks in Kirkuk and its surrounding villages,” the statement added.
According to the KRSC, the group had plans to launch attacks inside the city of Kirkuk and the Dubiz district.
The detainees are identified as Barzan Muhammed Mkhlef, also known as Qah, the leader of the IS group, and Rukan Muhammed Khalaf, Ahmed Muhammed Khalaf, Muhammed Ali Ibrahim and Fars Mukhlf Aswad.
In addition, the KRSC stated that on Monday its Counter-Terrorism forces arrested one of the main perpetrators of the 2015 terror attack in Ainkawa, Erbil.
The Directorate of the Counter-Terrorism in an operation outside of the Kurdistan Region arrested the principal perpetrator of the terror attack in Erbil, The KRSC said in a statement.
The KRSC intelligence operations in the past have led to the arrest and death of several ISIS leaders and members.
