Kurdish National Council to open first office in Berlin
Reporting by: Wladimir van Wilgenburg
The Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNC) will open an office in the German capital of Berlin in March.
Dr. Kamiran Haj Abdo, member of the KNC’s Foreign Relations Office, confirmed that their representation office in Berlin will be opened on 8 March.
The KNC leader Ibrahim Biro will participate in the opening. However, it’s unclear yet who is going to lead the new office.
The KNC is a body composed of representatives of Syrian-Kurdish political parties as well as members of civil society organisations and independent personalities and is backed by the president of the Kurdistan Region, Masoud Barzani.
The KNC joined the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces (SNC) on August 27, 2013. Since the Riyadh Opposition Conference in December 2015, the KNC became part of the High Negotiation Committee in the Syrian peace talks in Geneva.
Three KNC members will participate in the upcoming Geneva talks scheduled for 23 February.
Until now it’s unclear if the Democratic Union Party (PYD) will be included in the talks as part of a separate pro-Moscow opposition delegation.
