US Against Semi-autonomous Kurdish Region in Northern Syria
Washington supports a unified nonsectarian Syria
The US has declared that it does not support a semi-autonomous region for the Syrian Kurds to be established in the North of the country.
In a daily press briefing on Friday, US State Department Spokesperson John Kirby explained that Washington believes in a unified nonsectarian Syria.
“I’ve said it quite a few times. I’ll say it again today and it’s all written down in the communiques that the United States as a member of the ISSG signed up to, which is we believe in a whole – whole, unified, nonsectarian Syria,” Kirby responded the reporters. “And that continues to be our position today.”
Syrian Kurds have recently revealed that they are working on a project to establish a federal Kurdish region in Northern Syria.
Kurdistan Region Presidency previously extended its support for the establishment of a federal Kurdish region in Syria, saying that the Kurds, however, must remain united to maintain their rights.
After the eruption of the Islamic State (IS) in Syria, Kurds have been able to maintain their rule in a vast area across the northern border with Turkey
