Hundreds of migrants break out of Greek camp ATTACKING police and aid workers

The migrants ran out of the centre to protest against violence within the centre and the awful living conditions.

Tensions are rising at the refugee centre and there have been various uprisings by migrants at the camp who want to know what their fates entail.

They threw stones and water bottles at the island's police and aid workers and refugee agencies even evacuated their staff.

Officials said that they had increased security at the Lepida fenced camp following the incident.

On Saturday, a riot between migrants of different ehtnic origins led to a confrontation with locals who had gathered outside the camp.

Mayor of Leros, Michalis Kolias, said: "As it is, they have destroyed all the infrastructure within the compound."

Although the Lepida centre was built for 600 migrants, numbers have surged to 1,000.

This is not the only case of migrant overcrowding in Greece; about 15,000 migrants are at a camp at Hellinikon.

Charity volunteers have even left the island recently following threats from far-right protestors on the island.

Mr Kollias, on Monday called for all the migrants on the island to be transferred to another centre on mainland Greece.

Vigilantes claims that the presence of migrant camps has dealt a blow to tourism in the Eastern Aegean island.
