Shrewsbury Folk Festival bans 'blackface' Morris dancers

A folk festival has banned Morris dancers in black face make-up after it received complaints they could cause racial offence.

Shrewsbury Folk Festival bosses said dancers wearing full black face paint would not be booked from next year.

But the organisers said there were "no racial connotations" and they had "never wanted to upset people."

Fairness, Respect, Equality Shropshire (Fresh) said the ban showed sensitivity "to a changed social climate".

The weekend's event will be the last where Morris dancers will be allowed to showcase the 500-year-old custom of covering their faces with black make-up.

Anthea: If people do not like UK customs they should LEAVE THE UK - my relations did not come to UK and expect the country to change for them

But the festival's organisers said it was "a national issue that should not be focused solely on the Shrewsbury Folk Festival".

Morris dancing has been around for 100s of years and I think the majority of Morris Dancers follow the tradition of blacking their faces so that they could not be recognised

A) they do NOT belong here

B) why go to traditional UK celebrations?

It is as stupid as an English Christian going to a Muslim country and complaining about the Mosques

The name of a TV series that has been successfully running (with the same two white presenters) for more than 10 years

For a TV program to still be popular after 10 years is down to the format and also the hard work put into it by the two extremely likeable presenters

The Political Correctness mob decided it needed a bit of colour so they added a black man in the form of a former footballer

English TV has actually become ridicules

I seldom watch TV and do not own a TV

Some of my friends do have TVs and insist on watching it while I am visiting

VERY BAD MANNERS

But I do learn interesting things some times - such as the way they stick black faces all over the place

Political Correctness has really gone wrong - because several programs are being made whereby the families have adopted children of assorted colours

My son got his job through a great deal of studying and hard work - he was the best person for the job
