Would you know how to survive a terrorist attack

They are trying to kill you… so would you know how to survive a terrorist attack?
Top anti-terror cop reveals tactics you should adopt to escape - why hiding behind a desk is a really bad idea

What would you do if you were caught in the middle of a terrorist attack?
You might know to 'run, hide and tell' - but what exactly does that mean?

Terrorists are massacring innocent civilians across the western world, and although the chances of getting caught up in the next attack are small, few people are prepared.

Britain is currently on a 'severe' threat warning, and horrific atrocities have already been carried out in France, Belgium, and just recently the United States.

The latter charged Afghan-born Ahmad Khan Rahami with planting bombs in New York and New Jersey on Saturday, injuring 31 people, and the risk of lone-wolf attacks has never been higher.

Many fear the UK is faces a similar calamity, having not suffered a major hit since the London bombings in 2007.

And while the country conducts regular training and mock incidents in case of a Bataclan-type attack, how ready are its people if the worst should happen?

The UK Government has been spreading the slogan 'run, hide and tell,' in recent months.

But what does that really mean – and what are the crucial factors that could boost your chances of survival?

Detective Chief Superintendent Scott Wilson, appointed National Counter Terrorism Co-ordinator, Protect and Prepare, teamed up with MailOnline for an exclusive hard-hitting video setting out nine life-saving tactics.

The top anti-terror chief, who has worked with the Metropolitan Police since 2003, said you need to act fast.

'The people who are there to carry out these terrorist attacks are there to kill you and your western lifestyle,' he warns in the video, overlain with footage from Greater Manchester Police's suicide-bomber drill staged back in May.

Last year British police started their own campaign telling people to 'run, hide, tell' if they are caught up in a terrorist gun attack.

A public information film was released by the National Police Chiefs' Council and advised the first reaction must be to run for the exit.

'We're hoping this strategy can help to save more lives in the event of an attack,' explained Ch Supt Wilson.

'Run, for example, means don't hide under a table or play dead. Run out of the building. Don't try to negotiate.'

'Hide means that if you can't get out of the building, barricade yourself behind a steel door, stay quiet and turn your phone on silent.'

'Then tell - phone the police as soon as you can, give exact locations, what kind of weapon the terrorist might have had, are there any casualties.'

Teaming up with MailOnline, Ch Supt Wilson's advice in the video is given out alongside the scene where Greater Manchester police were preparing officers for a 'Daesh style' extremist assault similar to those that killed hundreds in Paris and Brussels.

In the mock event the 'suicide bomber' shouts 'Allahu Akbar', for which the force had to later issue an apology.

The police were then accused of 'bowing to political correctness' after angry commenters online believed they were right to make the exercise similar to previous ISIS planned attacks.

Expanding on his tips, Ch Supt Wilson added: 'It's about remaining calm and getting yourself to a safe place. The examples might be really simple but how many people would think of these actions when they're in that situation?'

Mr Wilson said the key piece of advice is for people to be stay 'alert but not alarmed' about the prospect of getting caught up in a terrorist incident.

He explained that crucial information in the event of an attack, called in via 999, will help the authorities who are ready for just such a moment.

Last month, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe announced more armed patrols for the streets of London.

Officers are equipped with rifles, hand guns, tasers, ballistic shields and BMW motorbikes for a rapid response.

NINE LIVE-SAVING TIPS IN THE EVENT OF AN ATTACK

1. You need to stay alert but not alarmed

2. There is no point staying to negotiate

3. Get yourself away from the danger zone

4. Try and hide within a building behind steel doors

5. Use properties where you can barricade yourself in

6. Don't hide behind a desk or a normal wall

7. Keep quiet

8. Ring 999

9. Get detailed information out there as quickly as possible – how many offenders? What type of weapon? Any casualties?

10. Put on false beard and shout 'Allah Akbar' :ymdevil:
