Regional Reactions to U.S. Strikes
on Iranian Nuclear Facilities
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — A wave of official responses swept across the Middle East on Sunday, June 22, 2025, following the United States' coordinated airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The region's key players, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Yemen's Houthi government, issued urgent calls for de-escalation, restraint, and a return to diplomacy
Saudi Arabia: Reaffirming Sovereignty and Political Resolution
In a statement released by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia voiced grave concern over the developments in Iran, particularly the U.S. targeting of nuclear facilities.
"The Kingdom reaffirms the content of its statement issued on 13/6/2025, in which it condemned and denounced the violation of the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran," read the statement. "It expresses the urgent need to exert all efforts to exercise restraint, calm tensions, and avoid escalation."
The Kingdom further called on the international community to "intensify its efforts under these sensitive circumstances to reach a political solution that ensures an end to the crisis and opens a new chapter towards achieving security and stability in the region."
Qatar: A Plea for Diplomacy and Humanitarian Responsibility
Doha echoed similar concerns, with the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs warning that the situation risks spiraling into a humanitarian catastrophe.
"Qatar regrets the deterioration of the situation following the bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities... The Ministry warns that the current dangerous escalation will lead to catastrophic consequences at both regional and international levels," the statement said.
The statement emphasized the need to halt all military operations and reaffirmed Qatar’s support for resolving disputes through peaceful means, urging all parties to return to diplomatic channels.
Iraq: "Condemns the recent airstrikes on nuclear facilities'
The Iraqi government has strongly condemned the recent airstrikes on nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic of Iran, warning that such actions constitute a grave threat to regional peace and stability. In an official statement issued on Sunday, June 22, 2025, government spokesperson Basem al-Awadi emphasized Iraq’s rejection of military escalation and urged a return to diplomacy.
"The Iraqi government expresses its deep concern and condemnation of the targeting of nuclear facilities within the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and affirms that this military escalation represents a serious threat to peace and security in the Middle East region and poses grave risks to regional stability," al-Awadi said.
He reiterated Iraq’s principled opposition to the use of force in international relations and called for the protection of sovereign infrastructure. "Iraq reiterates its principled rejection of the use of force in international relations and calls for respect for the sovereignty of states and the non-targeting of their vital facilities, especially those under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and used for peaceful purposes."
The spokesperson stressed that military options cannot replace diplomatic engagement: "Iraq also stresses that military solutions cannot substitute for dialogue and diplomacy, and that the continuation of such attacks could lead to a dangerous escalation with consequences that extend beyond the borders of any one state and jeopardize the stability of the region and the world."
Al-Awadi issued a reminder about the long-term costs of conflict, urging international actors to prioritize stability. "Iraq reminds that wars leave behind nothing but destruction, and that the responsibility of major powers and international institutions should focus on preventing further crises—not igniting them."
He concluded with a call for immediate de-escalation and diplomatic engagement: "From its position of responsibility toward regional and international peace and stability, Iraq calls for immediate de-escalation, the urgent opening of diplomatic channels to contain the situation, and efforts to defuse the crisis in a way that ensures mutual security and respects international law and the Charter of the United Nations."
The statement was issued amid rising regional tensions following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear infrastructure, drawing widespread concern from regional governments and international observers.
Oman: Condemnation from a Key Mediator
Oman, a central mediator in the Iran-U.S. nuclear talks, issued a stern rebuke of the U.S. strikes. In a statement published by the official Oman News Agency, Muscat expressed "deep concern, denunciation, and condemnation of the escalation resulting from the direct air strikes launched by the United States on sites in the Islamic Republic of Iran."
As a longstanding neutral broker in regional diplomacy, Oman’s condemnation highlights the significant setback the strikes may pose to future nuclear negotiations.
Houthis in Yemen: Accusations of U.S. Warmongering
Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi-led government in Sanaa described the U.S. attacks as a "blatant declaration of war."
In a strongly worded statement, the Houthis said: "The Trump administration's reckless aggression against three Iranian nuclear sites is a blatant declaration of war against the brotherly Iranian people. We declare our full support for the brotherly Iranian people."
The reaction signals possible further escalation in the region as Iran-aligned groups weigh responses to what they perceive as Western provocation.
As tensions mount, regional actors continue to urge diplomacy to avert further destabilization in an already volatile geopolitical landscape.
