Woolwich attack: Family tribute to soldier Lee Rigby

The family of murdered Drummer Lee Rigby have paid tribute to him in an emotional news conference.

Stepfather Ian Rigby, flanked by mother Lyn and wife Rebecca, read a statement prepared by the family which described him as a family man who believed "life was for living".

Drummer Rigby, 25, from Manchester, served with the 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

He was killed by two men on Wednesday, outside Woolwich Barracks

The soldier killed in an attack on a London street has been named as Drummer Lee Rigby of the 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Drummer Rigby, 25, from Manchester, leaves behind a two-year-old son.

Both Christian and Muslim leaders have joined together to condemn the attack on Lee Rigby.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said he was horrified by it and he praised the response of Muslims and other faith groups following the killing.

Muslims attending Friday prayers at the mosque closest to where the incident happened added their condemnation.

We have to learn to live together

I know English people who refuse to eat curry or anything else not English and refer to it as foreign muck. Yet those same people drink tea and coffee and are happy to eat fruit and vegetables grown in other countries

We should share our cultures with each other more and stop having different ethnic communities isolated from each other.

MI5 'tried to recruit' Michael Adebolajo, friend claims

Woolwich murder suspect Michael Adebolajo was being "harassed" by MI5 and had been asked to work for the agency, a childhood friend has told Newsnight.

Abu Nusaybah spoke to the BBC's Richard Watson about his friendship with Adeboljo, who is linked with the killing of 25-year-old Drummer Lee Rigby.

Mr Nusaybah said Adeboljo told him that MI5 agents visited his house around six months ago.

"He mentioned that initially they wanted to ask him if he knew certain individuals. After him saying he didn't know these individuals... they asked him whether he'd be interested in working for them," he told the BBC.

The BBC could not obtain any confirmation from Whitehall sources.

Mr Nusaybeh was arrested on BBC premises by Met Police Counter-Terrorism Branch, after the interview, on suspicion of terrorism offences.

Woolwich murder sparks anti-Muslim backlash

There has been a large increase in anti-Muslim incidents since the murder of a British soldier in Woolwich, an inter-faith charity has said.

Faith Matters, which runs a helpline, said they had received 162 calls since Wednesday's attack, up from a daily average of six.

A number of people have been charged after allegedly offensive comments were made on social media websites.

Drummer Lee Rigby was killed near Woolwich Barracks on Wednesday.

Shortly after his killing, 28-year-old Michael Adebolajo was filmed by a passer-by saying he had carried out the attack because British soldiers killed Muslims every day.

Mr Adebolajo and a second suspect, Michael Adebowale, 22, were arrested at the scene and remain in hospital after they were shot by police. Both men were known to the security services, sources told the BBC.

'Significant online activity'

Fiyaz Mughal, director of Faith Matters, said the nature of the incidents ranged from attacks against mosques, graffiti, the pulling off of Muslim women's headscarves and more general name calling and abuse.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "What's really concerning is the spread of these incidents. They're coming in from right across the country.

"Secondly, some of them are quite aggressive very focused, very aggressive attacks.

"And thirdly, there also seems to be significant online activity... suggesting co-ordination of incidents and attacks against institutions or places where Muslims congregate."

Since the attack, a number of people have been charged by police after allegedly offensive messages were posted on social media websites.

These include a 22-year-old man from Lincoln, a 28-year-old man from London, a 23-year-old woman from Southsea, and a 19-year-old man from Woking.

Three men - two from Gateshead and one from Stockton - have been arrested by Northumbria Police on suspicion of posting racist tweets.

It came ahead of a protest by the English Defence League (EDL) in Newcastle in which around 1,500 people took part. It had been planned for months.

A French soldier has been attacked today in Paris, with a cutter. His aggressor (non identified, he fled) was a 'Northern-African' man, with a jellabah : only Salafists are wearing such dress if they are Arabs (Black African wear dress but it has no religious meaning).

The soldier is safe now, but if such things happen here and there in Europe it will increase the anti-muslim reaction. In France no one has forgotten Mohammed Merah who killed French soldiers (some of them were muslims also) and then a teacher and young kids in a Jewish school.

That's what terrorists want : provoking an anti muslim reaction which could incite muslims to become radical because they have been unfairly persecuted.

We could hope that paranoia won't have big effect.
