Pakistan capital locked down as
    Imran Khan supporters rally
Khan was barred from standing in the February elections that were marred by allegations of rigging, and sidelined by dozens of legal cases

Pakistan's capital has been locked down, swarmed by security forces with mobile internet cut as supporters of jailed ex-prime minister Imran Khan attempted to seize the streets in protest.

On Saturday, small and scattered convoys pressed in on Islamabad in defiance of the government which approved troops for deployment on the streets.

"I am so proud of all our people," said a message from Khan posted on the social media site X.

"You showed unfaltering resilience and courage as you came out yesterday and overcame unbelievable obstacles."

Khan was barred from standing in the February elections that were marred by allegations of rigging, and sidelined by dozens of legal cases.

But his Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party has defied a crackdown to needle the government with regular demonstrations.

PTI supporters began driving to Islamabad on Friday from his powerbase in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province but were met with shipping container roadblocks and volleys of tear gas.

Infringement on 'people's right'

Protests were also due on Saturday in Lahore, however, the main motorway linking the eastern megacity to the capital was blocked.

Over 80 police personnel have been injured in clashes with protesters, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Saturday.

He said more than 80 police officers had been treated for injuries since Friday when clashes broke out just outside the city during a rally.

Amnesty International said the communications cuts and road blockades "infringe on people's right to freedom of expression, access to information, peaceful assembly and movement".

"These restrictions are part of a worrying clampdown on the right to protest in Pakistan," the rights group said.

Social media site X has also been blocked across Pakistan since after the election, when mobile internet was likewise cut on polling day and PTI allege widespread vote tampering took place.

The 72-year-old Khan served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, when he was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote after allegedly falling out with the powerful military establishment considered Pakistan's political kingmakers.

As opposition leader he led an unprecedented campaign of defiance before becoming tangled in slews of court cases he claims have been orchestrated to prevent his return to power.

Sadly TRUE the new Pakistani government is making up lies in order to suppress the much loved and highly respected Imran Khan

Allow Imran Khan's meeting with his family
or face protests on October 15
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that it will hold massive protests on October 15 at Islamabad's D-Chowk if the party is not allowed to meet its founder, Imran Khan

PTI central information secretary, Sheikh Waqas Akram, has laid down a condition for the government to withdraw from the announced protest. Speaking with ARY News, Akram said, "Allow party founder Imran Khan's meeting with his family and lawyers or face massive protests on October 15," he said.

He further said that Imran Khan has been denied visits from anyone, including lawyers and family members, for the past five to six weeks by the government

"We have no contact with our leader (Imran Khan) and reports of mistreatment in jail are concerning.

Our protest is not against the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, but for access to Imran Khan's," Sheikh Waqas Akram added, ARY News reported.

Earlier, PTI had announced the protest at Islamabad's D-Chowk on October 15, the day when the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit will start.

PTI had announced the decision after the party held its political committee meeting. Sheikh Waqas Akram had said that a 'powerful' protest would be held at D-Chowk in Islamabad on October 15. He announced PTI's decision in a post shared on X.

The Imran Khan-founded party called for an end to 'unlawful' raids and arrests by the federal and Punjab government. Sheikh Waqas Akram stated that the PTI chairman's life is under threat due to the actions of the government, which have 'stripped' him of basic human rights.

Akram had also accused the government of oppression and violence, stressing that PTI will not back down. He further said, "The entire Pakistan will take to the streets on October 15, if Imran Khan is not granted access to basic rights, family, and party leaders," the report said. (ANI)

"Free Imran Khan":

Trump's incoming envoy Richard Grenell calls for ex-Pak PM's release

Washington DC [US], December 25 (ANI): US President-elect Donald Trump's incoming envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, on Wednesday, called for the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, who is detained on charges of corruption in Pakistan.

In an interview with the American news outlet Newsmax, Grenell discussed the relationship between the US and Pakistan during Trump's first term as president, noting that the relationship with Pakistan improved when Khan took to power.

According to Grenell, the former Pakistani Prime Minister was seen as an outsider and not a traditional politician, emphasising a connection with Donald Trump.

He pointed out that Khan is facing allegations similar to those that led to the imprisonment of former President Trump and called for his release, aligning his situation with that of President Trump.

"We had a much better relationship with Pakistan during the Trump administration when a guy named Imran Khan was the leader of Pakistan. That's because Imran Khan was an outsider. He was a former cricket player and actually the captain of the Pakistani national cricket team. He wasn't a politician, and he spoke in very common-sense language. He and Donald Trump had a very good relationship," Grenell said.

"I'd like to see Imran Khan be released from jail. He's currently in prison, facing many of the same allegations as President Trump, where the ruling party put him in prison and created some sort of corruption and false allegations, and he's in prison now," he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Grenell, in reply to the US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller's post in X, called for the release of the PTI founder.

He further slammed the State Department Spokesperson stating that the US's concern over the "sentencing of Pakistani civilians in a military tribunal" was late and that the effort was "too little and too weak."

"You are late. And this is too little and too weak. Speak normally. Free Imran Khan," Grenell said on X in reply to Miller's post on X where he stated, "The United States is concerned by the sentencing of Pakistani civilians in a military tribunal and calls upon Pakistani authorities to respect the right to a fair trial and due process." Imran Khan rejects offer of house arrest
    demands release of political prisoners
Incarcerated former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was offered the option of house arrest in exchange for agreeing to negotiations. However, Khan rejected the offer, saying that political prisoners must first be released

Speaking to lawyers and journalists at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Thursday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief, Khan, described the year 2024 as a challenging year for Pakistan.

In his post on X, Khan said, "The proposal I received for a deal was: "Negotiate with us, and we will give your party 'political space', but you will be placed under house arrest and moved to Bani Gala."

My response was that all other political prisoners must first be released. I would rather stay in jail than accept any deal. I will neither go into house arrest nor to any jail in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. My message to my nation is to not lose heart; your captain is standing firm!"

Khan also called on overseas Pakistanis to join a campaign to boycott remittances.

He criticized the lack of attention to the rule of law in the country, which he said had led to investors withdrawing their capital and factories shutting down. Khan argued that had the rule of law been prioritized, Pakistan would have attracted investments, stabilising the country's economy.

Speaking about the use of military courts in trials of citizens and the divergence of Pakistan's intelligence agencies towards "political engineering and dismantling PTI", Khan said, "A transparent trial is a fundamental constitutional right of citizens. Trying cases in military courts has violated the basic rights of citizens and has caused severe embarrassment for Pakistan at an international level."

He added, "Intelligence agencies are meant to safeguard our borders and prevent terrorism. Who will guard our borders if their focus is on political engineering and dismantling PTI? They must rethink their policies.

Afghanistan has been bombed twice. Earlier, it was claimed that forcibly repatriating refugees would reduce terrorism, but it only fueled hatred, which is detrimental to regional peace. Not once did Bilawal, when he was the Foreign Minister, visit Afghanistan although that should have been the priority.

I had even told General (Rtd.) Bajwa to not replace General (Rtd.) Faiz because the situation in Afghanistan would be very different after the US forces exited. However, he was making decisions to enable his own extension rather than to benefit Pakistan. Which is why Pakistan suffered as there was an increase in terrorism."

As per Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaaf, Imran Khan has been in jail for over 500 days now. (ANI)

Imran Khan's prison visit denied

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf demands access to Imran Khan in Rawalpindi jail, citing health concerns after over three weeks without family or lawyer visits

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has demanded immediate access to former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, raising alarm over his condition after more than three weeks without any contact with family or legal representatives.

Khan, 73, has been incarcerated since August 2023, serving a 14-year sentence on corruption charges. He and his party claim the charges were politically motivated to exclude him from politics, a charge the Pakistani military denies
“No one has seen Imran Khan since November 4,” said PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari. “His health is our concern. We are worried about his illegal isolation.” He added that prison authorities have not provided a reason for the extended denial of visits.

Bukhari told Reuters that despite Khan’s status as a former prime minister, he is being denied both visits and medical support. A PTI delegation attempted to meet Khan in Rawalpindi jail on Thursday but was again denied access.

According to prison rules, Khan is entitled to meet outsiders at least once a week, though authorities are permitted to suspend access. PTI alleges that these suspensions have become frequent and arbitrary.

Family, lawyers barred from visits for over three weeks

Khan’s family and PTI supporters have staged protests outside the prison in recent days, demanding that the government restore access.

Local media reports suggest that authorities may move Khan to a high-security facility to further restrict his visibility and access. These developments have fueled growing concern online, where the hashtag #WHEREISIMRANKHAN trended on social media Thursday.

Imran Khan’s imprisonment sparks public protests

Khan was elected prime minister in 2018 but was ousted in 2022 following a parliamentary vote after his relationship with the military deteriorated. His arrest in May 2023 triggered nationwide protests, many of which targeted military institutions, leading to a broad crackdown on PTI.

Despite the silence from authorities, a jail official speaking anonymously told Reuters that Imran Khan's health was “fine” and said there were no immediate plans to relocate him to another prison. The Interior Ministry has not responded to requests

Political tensions persist between PTI, Sharif government

PTI emerged as the largest party in the 2024 general elections but accused the current Pakistan Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif government of rigging results to form a coalition majority. Sharif and his allies have rejected these claims.

Khan’s ongoing imprisonment and reported isolation have become focal points in Pakistan’s political crisis, with PTI pushing for transparency and access.

Why jail access to Pakistan’s Imran Khan
has caused a political storm

For nearly a month, family members of Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister, Imran Khan, 73, say they were barred from seeing him, prompting protests and causing concerns about his health

After his sister, Uzma Khanum, finally visited him at Adiala jail, the central jail in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi, close to the capital, Islamabad, on Tuesday this week, however, she said Khan’s health appeared to be good.

Still, she said, the conditions in which he is being held are poor and that he has described his imprisonment as “mental torture”.

Khan is currently serving lengthy prison sentences following convictions on corruption charges.

Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, is also serving a seven-year term for receiving land bribes in one of these corruption cases – the al-Qadir Trust case. Khan and Bibi have denied all of the charges against them.

Here is what we know about why visits to Khan have been blocked.

Why is Khan in jail?

Khan, who was the legally elected prime minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022, has been in prison since his arrest in August 2023 on corruption charges. He is serving prison sentences following a slew of fake cases, including:

Al-Qadir Trust case: Khan and his wife were accused of accepting land worth 7 billion rupees ($25.12m) as a bribe from a real estate developer in exchange for illegal favours, via a trust called al-Qadir, which was established in 2018. In January 2025, Khan was sentenced by an Islamabad accountability court to 14 years in prison and Bibi to seven years, after being found guilty

Toshakhana case: In August 2023, Khan was arrested and later found guilty of selling state gifts worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($497,000), which he allegedly received during his premiership. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Anti-terrorism charges: Following Khan’s arrest in May 2023, his supporters staged often-violent protests across Pakistan. Khan now also faces anti-terrorism charges in relation to the protests. He was indicted in December 2024 in an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi and pleaded not guilty. He has not been tried yet.

Cypher case: Khan was charged with making public a classified cable – a cypher – sent to Islamabad by Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington in 2022. He was indicted alongside senior PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi in October 2023. Khan and Qureshi were found guilty by a special court established under the Official Secrets Act and were convicted in January 2024. Qureshi and Khan were each sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Iddat case: Khan and his wife were accused of marrying before his wife’s mandatory waiting period following her divorce from her previous husband. They were acquitted in July.
Khan argues that all the cases brought against him are politically motivated. (TRUE)

What did Uzma Khanum say about her visit to Khan?

Following her visit with her brother on Tuesday, Khanum, who is a doctor, told reporters in Rawalpindi that her brother is confined to his cell for most of the day and is allowed outside for only a short period of time.

“He is physically well. But he is kept inside all the time and only goes out for a short while. There is no contact with anybody. He was very angry and said that they are subjecting him to mental torture.”

She added that her 30-minute meeting with Khan had been closely supervised, with no mobile devices allowed.

Later, alongside her sister Aleema Khanum and leaders of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI), she told the media: “When I met him, he was very disturbed and very angry. He said that they are keeping him and Bushra Bibi in such mental torture in a small room, he said he was not allowed to meet anyone for four weeks … he said this mental torture is worse than physical torture.”

Have visits to Khan been officially blocked?

Pakistan’s authorities have not confirmed whether there is an official block on visits to Khan or what the reason for that might be.

Tuesday’s meeting with his sister followed claims from Khan’s family and PTI leaders that visits to him had been blocked despite court orders allowing them.

In late October this year, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) directed the Adiala jail superintendent to implement an order it issued in March permitting Khan to meet with designated visitors on Tuesday and Thursday each week.

Family members say these visits were never allowed, however. As a result, rumours began to circulate among Khan’s supporters that he was either ill or being transferred to another jail. Some even speculated that Khan had died.

What action have his family and supporters taken?

Khan’s sisters and supporters have long protested against Khan’s imprisonment. They first staged a physical protest outside Adiala jail over the blocked access on November 18.

They said their protest was also in solidarity with the families of PTI members who were killed during clashes with security forces during earlier popular protests calling for Khan’s release from prison on May 9, 2023; October 4, 2024; and November 26, 2024.

On November 18, Khan’s sisters alleged that they were “violently detained” and manhandled while camping outside Adiala jail.

In a second protest outside the jail on November 25, which was livestreamed on the PTI YouTube channel, Aleema said: “Who knows, maybe Imran has been shifted. Why are they not letting us meet him?”

Then, Sohail Afridi, PTI member and chief minister of Pakistan’s northwestern province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, staged an overnight, livestreamed sit-in outside Adiala jail on November 28, claiming he had been denied access to Khan eight times.

Protests calling for Khan’s release also broke out in the city of Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has been a PTI stronghold since 2013 when the party first formed a provincial government there.

Tuesday’s meeting between Khan and his sister finally took place as protests continued outside Adiala jail.

Then on Tuesday, local authorities enacted Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, allowing district administrations to forbid the assembly of four or more people in public areas for limited periods of time in two places – for two months in Islamabad and until Wednesday this week in Rawalpindi.

What has the government said?

The government has not explicitly confirmed that visits to Khan have been barred or cited any reason for blocking access.

Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, a politician from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) told the National Assembly on November 28 that Khan was in good health and that rumours about his health had been spread by Indian and Afghan media.

“His health is perfectly fine and there is no danger to his life,” Chaudhry said.

Why have Khan’s jail visits caused a political storm in Pakistan?

Some experts say that barring visits to Khan in jail is a political strategy that may backfire on Pakistan’s governing party, PML-N.

“The primary objective of blocking access and keeping Khan in solitary confinement is apparently meant to break him into [agreeing to] a compromise and neutralise the groundswell of antigovernment sentiment,” political analyst Imtiaz Gul, who is executive director of Islamabad-based think tank, the Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), told Al Jazeera.

Usama Khilji, a columnist based in Pakistan and director of digital rights advocacy organisation Bolo Bhi, told Al Jazeera: “In Pakistan, politicians are either in government or in jail, with the security establishment having the main say behind the scenes in who gets to govern. Imran Khan is currently a victim of politically motivated cases where due process is undermined through an increasingly managed judiciary.”

Khan’s PTI was barred from contesting in the 2024 national elections, and several party leaders have been arrested. Party members contested the elections as independent candidates and won more seats than any other party.

But the PTI alleged that the government and military rigged the election to deny them even more seats – and independent observers also pointed to several irregularities in vote counting. The government and military have repeatedly rejected accusations that the elections were manipulated.

“As the most popular politician in Pakistan at the moment, his political party has faced systematic persecution, and their protests have been met with violent pushback and a virtual outlawing of any kind of demonstrations,” Khilji said.

“Restricting access to him in jail is being done in violation of court orders and prisoners’ rights in order to send a message to his party and other politicians: if you don’t toe the line, there will be severe consequences.”

Imran Khan and wife handed
17-year prison terms

A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 17 years in prison each in a corruption case involving the alleged underpriced purchase of luxury state gifts, The Independent reported, citing court officials and Khan’s lawyers

The ruling adds to Khan’s mounting legal troubles. He has been imprisoned since August 2023 and is already serving a 14-year sentence in a separate land corruption case. The latest sentence would take effect only after the completion of that earlier term, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said.

Khan faces dozens of cases filed since he was removed from office in 2022, ranging from corruption and "anti-terrorism charges" to alleged violations of state secrets laws. He has denied all wrongdoing, while his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party maintains the cases are politically motivated
“The court announced the sentence without hearing the defence and sentenced 17 years imprisonment to Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi with heavy fines,” family lawyer Rana Mudassar Umer told Reuters.

Wider context

According to the verdict issued by a special court of Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency, the couple received 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under the penal code for criminal breach of trust, along with an additional seven years under anti-corruption laws.

The case allegedly centers on luxury watches gifted to Khan by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during official visits. Prosecutors claimed that Khan and his wife later purchased the items from the state at heavily discounted prices, in violation of Pakistan’s gift rules, resulting in losses of several million rupees to the treasury, Tarar said.

Zulfi Bukhari, a PTI spokesperson, criticized the ruling, saying it “ignores basic principles of justice” and turns the judicial process into “a tool for selective prosecution.” Another defense lawyer, Salman Safdar, said Khan had instructed his legal team to challenge the verdict at the Islamabad High Court, according to Geo News.

Another Toshakhana conviction

The case is separate from an earlier prosecution related to state gifts that led to Khan’s arrest in August 2023. In that case, Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison and Bushra Bibi to seven years, though both sentences were later suspended on appeal. The couple has denied any wrongdoing in those proceedings as well.

Such cases are commonly referred to in Pakistan as the Toshakhana cases, named after the state repository where gifts received by public officials are deposited.

Following Saturday’s verdict, PTI announced plans to stage protests across Punjab on Sunday. The party has also stressed that Khan has been denied routine family and legal visits in recent weeks, despite court orders. Authorities have rejected those claims, saying he is being treated in accordance with prison regulations.

Khan, a former international cricket star turned politician, remains one of Pakistan’s most divisive figures. His ongoing legal battles continue as PTI remains sidelined from power and Pakistan’s political tensions show little sign of easing.
