Hamas is launching a media boycott of the football club Barcelona after reports surfaced that the football squad gave a complimentary sporting event ticket to Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier who was held captive in the Gaza Strip, by Hamas, for over five years.

According to Yahoo Sports, Hamas official Attallah Abu Al Subah confirmed the arbitrary boycott, saying that as of Thursday television stations in Gaza will not broadcast any of the Barcelona matches and no newspapers will cover the games.

Since his release Shalit has taken to sportswriting, with a column in Yediot Aharonot. In his first column last June, Shalit revealed how his love for sports kept him going through his time in captivity.

Barcelona invite 3 Palestinians for Real Madrid clash after Hamas boycott

Barcelona has invited three Palestinians to attend its Oct. 7 match against Real Madrid in response to Hamas calling for a media boycott of the club after it gave a complimentary ticket to an Israeli soldier.
Barcelona announced in a statement that it had accepted the Palestinian embassy's request for tickets for soccer player Mahmoud Al Sarsak, who was held in an Israeli jail for three years until his release this year following a hunger strike. The club also invited Palestinian Football Union President Jibril Rajoub and the Palestinian Authority ambassador.

The Spanish club also said that after receiving a ticket request from him, it invited Gilad Schalit, the Israeli soldier who was held captive from 2006-11 by Gaza Strip militants.

As far as I know no one took their calls seriously in Gaza City from what I read. Most of the people turned up in their cafes, nargil lounges, etc. to watch the game despite the groups calls for them to stay inside and not benefit the viewing numbers.

I suspect though if we were in reverse, if Barca players had done something like pay respect to Ataturk or something if they visited Turkey, we'd be upset too.

Shalit was an Israeli Soldier in Palestinian captive. Atatürk and his policy is the murder of hundred thousands and the reason behind the assimilation of millions of Kurds. You cant compare them. However I would agree if Hamas was outrages if Barcelona would have invited a well known Palestinian hater but this wasnt the case.

I know you can't compare Shalit with Ataturk, but to Palestinians, at least those that support Hamas, Shalit is representative of a government that Palestinians despise, one they see as responsible for doing the same things to them that Ataturk did to Kurdistan. A better comparison would be the way you might view a soldier of Turkey- the individual himself doesn't matter, but the group he is fighting for, the ideals of the Turkish military and its role in ethnic cleansing of Kurdistan, it's another thing entirely. I guess media hasn't focused on Kurds as much as they have on Palestine, but I'm sure PKK has also engaged in kidnappings of soldiers and government collaborators in the past, though not as long as Shalit was kept.

We would be throwing a fit if any Turkish soldier was honored in any way, I guarantee you.

All I'm saying is that it's not really surprising that they would be dismayed at this double standard. We're not seeing released Palestinian fighters getting tickets to football games, are we?
