Some 25 countries are now involved in a vast search operation for the missing airliner that disappeared over a week ago, Malaysian officials say.

The search area - from central Asia to the southern Indian Ocean - takes in large tracts of land and sea.

An already complex search operation has become even more difficult, Malaysia's transport minister says.

Crew, passengers and ground staff are being investigated after it was confirmed the jet was commandeered.

Investigators are trying to obtain more radar and satellite data from any of the countries that Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 may have passed over, with its 239 crew and passengers.

The leaders of several Asian countries have been briefed by the Malaysia government in what Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has described as a new phase of the search.

"From focusing mainly on shallow seas, we are now looking at large tracts of land, crossing 11 countries, as well as deep and remote oceans," he said at a news conference.

Malaysian officials are contacting countries including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, China, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and France.

They are also asking countries to provide assistance in the search for the plane, including satellite data and analysis, ground-search capabilities, and maritime and air assets.

National police chief Gen Khalid Abu Bakar said background checks had been requested on all passengers aboard the plane, but that so far nothing suspicious had been reported - though some intelligence agencies still had to respond.

The police are also reportedly looking at the family life and psychological state of the plane's pilot, Zaharie Shah, and co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, and searched their homes on Saturday.

The two men had not asked to fly together, Mr Hishammuddin confirmed at the news conference.

Modern technology is sucn that it is inconceivable for something so large to vanish without a trace

And why did it take the Malaysia to admit to certain things such as the belief that the communications system might have been switched off manually - though some form of ping could be detected for some hours afterwards

The control cabins on commercial flights are now sealed from the inside - the only people who could tamper with the equipment are members of the flight crew

If the plane was hijacked - which now seems highly lightly - it may well have had a prearranged destination - to me it seems unlikely to be a spur of the minute action - something obviously went wrong with that plan

Since 9/11 all countries are extra vigilant - any plane entering another countries' airspace is immediately detected and questioned - should they fail to respond armed fighters either fly up and escort them down or SHOOT them down

I believe that for whatever reason this plane entered another countries airspace and was shot down - and that the county concerned is now hiding that fact

Some pointed the flaws of Malaysian authorities and leadership, paralyzed by an establishment made of clans, unable to take initiative when happens a such event. Chinese government is really angry about that.

Yes, it is possible for some thing so large to disappear regardless to the modern high technology when you know how to control this technology. This high technology is man-made and man can misuse it. This is a preplaned plot, highly executed. My hypothetical guess is this: the plane has landed some where in Afghanistan or somewhere else and now it is under the control of Talebans/Al-Qaeda. The pilots are the hijackers or others, who trained for this purpose, did the hijacking. The target of the hijack is the plane and the senior pilot, who built a flight simulator. Now the plane will be used as a sort of flight simulator with aid of the senior pilot to train terrorists to pilot planes.

On the other hand the plane could have been hijacked by a sort of sky pirates. possibly because the plane was carrying a consignment of gold or hard currency.

I wonder what they have done with the passengers. It would have been difficult to kill more than 200 persons in the same time. They might be used as hostages, or if the plane is used as a missile, they could be used as human shields.

Kurds hijacked it and have taken it Kurdistan were they will refuel it and aim it at erDOGan

The even more far-fetched: Many of the above theories might seem far-fetched but there are even more outlandish-sounding ones out there.

There are only two countries that can pull such a daring kidnapping without being detected . USA and Isreal . The plane most probably landed in Philippine where it is still there or fueled and diverted to anther destination .

Reason for kidnapping : it is always about money and informations . I would check the first class passengers , because that is where all the answers are .

MH370: Maldives Islanders claim to have spotted "low flying jet"

The global hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight has shifted to a tiny island in the Maldives, where residents spotted a “low flying jumbo jet” hours after the aircraft disappeared.

Several witnesses in Dhaalu Atoll saw a plane heading south that bore the red stripe and white background of Malaysia Airlines planes.

The sightings, reported by a local news outlet, would have occurred more than seven hours after the plane, carrying 12 crew and 227 mainly Chinese passengers, lost contact with air traffic control and took its sudden westward turn during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in the early hours of Saturday March 8.

“I’ve never seen a jet flying so low over our island before. We’ve seen seaplanes, but I’m sure that this was not one of those. I could even make out the doors on the plane clearly,” said an witness.

Question:

Do they now have proof or are they trying to keep a lid on something as they did originally?

They have to find the black box, now. It can take time. For the Rio-Paris 447 Air France it has been found 2 years after the crash.
