Newlywed From Iraq Fatally Shot While Taking Pics After Seeing Snow For First Time
By Todd L. Davis
A newlywed taking photos of his first snowfall was killed in an apparent random shooting in Dallas Thursday, less than a month after he moved to the United States from Iraq, police and family said.
"He just bought a car," the victim's father-in-law, Mohammed Al Taae, said. "[He was] trying to find a decent job to start his life."
The Shooting
Witnesses told police that a group of men was randomly firing a gun near the 9900 block of Walnut Street at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday when 36-year-old Ahmed Al-Jumaili was shot.
Police said Al-Jumaili was in a nearby parking lot taking pictures of the snow at the time.
Al-Jumaili was transported to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital where he died from his injuries, according to Dallas Police Department Spokeswoman Monica Cordova.
Police said several parked vehicles were also shot.
Detectives are investigating the shooting and have not named any suspects or persons of interest.
Coming to America
According to Al Taae, Al-Jumaili was a contractor for an Internet company in Baghdad and often worked with the U.S. Army and Air Force.
Al-Jumaili moved to the United States about 20 days before the shooting to marry his wife. He had been working toward the move for more than a year.
Al Taae said he can't believe Al-Jumaili escaped dangers like the Islamic State group and others in Iraq only to die in a random shooting in Dallas.
