President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has finally been accredited after 30 minutes delay due to the failure of the card readers in polling unit.

The president stood for more than 27 minutes until the fourth card reader worked after the failure of the first three. He encouraged Nigerians to be patient with the process, insiting that the election will be free and fair. “I encourage Nigerians to be patient, even if card readers have issues. Don’t instigate violence, ” he said. Nigerians praised his gentlemanly behaviour.

“Ever the gentleman, President Jonathan remains standing for half an hour, surrendering available seats to his mother & wife If the President can wait patiently to be accredited, it is a good example for all Nigerians. Follow the President’s lead #Nigeriadecides” His mother and wife were accredited without hitches.

The two major contestant are Muhammadu Buhari of APC and Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of PDP.

Muhammadu Buhari (born 17 December 1942) is a Nigerian politician and a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army who was Head of State of Nigeria from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état. The term Buharism is ascribed to the Buhari military government. He also ran unsuccessfully for the office of President in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. In December 2014, he emerged as the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, for the 2015 elections. A native of Daura in Katsina State, Buhari is of the Fulani ethnic background, and his faith is Sunni Islam.

Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, GCFR, BNER, GCON (born 20 November 1957) is a Nigerian politician who has been President of Nigeria since 2010. Prior to his role as President, he served as Governor of Bayelsa State from 2005 to 2007 and as Vice-President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Remember Nigeria has it's own version of the Islamic Front in Boko Haram. The present government lead by Goodluck Jonathan has been taking a tough stand against the millintants and so far seems to be winning the battle against them.

Goodluck Jonathan has also worked hard and removed much of the corruption within the Nigerian Government and it's officials.

Personally I belive it would be a mistake to replace Goodluck Jonathan so I wish

Goodluck to Goodluck :ymparty:

The Guardian

Millions vote in Nigeria elections hit by Islamist attacks and technology issues

Voters take to polls in continent’s biggest democracy but historic day marred by Boko Haram attacks, killing 14 in north-east, and faulty voting technology

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for democracy in Africa on Saturday as Nigerians resolutely cast their votes amid shootings by Islamist militants and widespread technical glitches.

The long-awaited election in the continent’s biggest democracy, with 60 million potential voters, did not descend into the chaos or violence that the doomsayers had predicted, but it was hardly plain sailing. From the moment that President Goodluck Jonathan himself was rejected by a malfunctioning voter registration machine there were glitches until, by late afternoon, beleaguered officials had been forced to announce that polling in some areas would spill over into a second day.

Few would dare predict the result. Jonathan, 57, faces an unprecedented challenge from 72-year-old Muhammadu Buhari in the most fiercely contested election in Nigeria’s history. The president has been criticised for failing to get to grips with security or the economy, while Buhari once ruled as a military dictator – a contest that has prompted analysts to refer to a choice between one leader who is too weak and another who is too strong.

In the embattled north-east, the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram carried out its threat to disrupt polling day. Fourteen were killed, including an opposition politician, in three separate raids on polling stations.

“We could hear the gunmen shouting: ‘Didn’t we warn you about staying away from [the] election?’” one official told Agence France-Presse after three died in Gombe state. “They set fire to all the election materials we abandoned as we escaped.”

Boko Haram has killed thousands of people in the past six years, but has recently suffered setbacks against the Nigerian military and regional allies. Its leader, Abubakar Shekau, warned in a video message last month: “This election will not be held even if we are dead. Even if we are not alive, Allah will not allow you to do it.”

But many voters in Boko Haram’s heartland defied the threat. Volunteers swept voters with handheld metal detectors in Maiduguri as a precaution after a string of suicide attacks in recent weeks.

At a school in Yola, Abbas Mohammed, a university lecturer, cast his vote in one of the centres set up especially for the 1.5 million people displaced by the violence. “If we don’t vote, it will be as if Boko Haram has battered us twice,” he said.

Let us hope that whoever wins the election will manage to destroy Boko Haram and prevent the Islamic State support from spreading any further

Nigeria election: Early results show close race

Early results from Nigeria's election show little separating the incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan, and ex-military ruler Muhammadu Buhari.

With eight states and the capital Abuja declared, President Jonathan's People's Democratic Party (PDP) has a lead of about 20,000 votes.

Final results in the closely contested poll are due Tuesday.

The US and UK in a joint statement expressed concern over possible "political interference" in the count.

"So far, we have seen no evidence of systemic manipulation of the process," said the statement from UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and US Secretary of State John Kerry.

"But there are disturbing indications that the collation process, where the votes are finally counted, may be subject to deliberate political interference."

Nigeria's election commission (Inec) dismissed these fears, with a spokesman telling the AFP agency "there is absolutely no basis" to talk of meddling.

BBC News

The winner of Nigeria's presidential poll, Muhammadu Buhari, has hailed his victory as a vote for change and proof the nation has embraced democracy.

Mr Buhari also praised outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan as a "worthy opponent" who peacefully relinquished power.

Gen Buhari beat Mr Jonathan by 15.4 million votes to 13.3 million.

Observers have generally praised the election, though there have been allegations of fraud.

I wonder how Muhammadu Buhari managed to win the election

Perhaps he bought more votes than the other side :))

Personally I am suprised that he won and I believe that America may well have had a hand in his winning

Muhammadu Buhari was trained in the United States Army War College in America - a place that proberly leads to CIA recruitment :ymdevil:

The CIA was probably behind him when he led a coup and gained power on 31 December 1983 - he was also Governor of the Northeastern State
between August 1975 & March 1976

I fear that Muhammadu Buhari will support Boko Haram rather than supress it :-s

Goodluck Jonathan is a Christian - Muhammadu Buhari is a Muslim

Muhammadu Buhari is not a good person - whereas Goodluck Jonathan is too good natured and has failed to stamp out courrupion within the government and other official bodies

As the vote was such a close one I fear that there will be a graet deal more tension between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria :-s

Remember Nigeria has a reputation for being one of the most corrupt countries in the world

The corruption is deeply in-bedded within the culture - everything that is sell-able is bought and sold through various types of bartering and bribery - from local business and minor officials to MPs almost everyone can be bought

Muhammadu Buhari has made several attempts to win leadership in previous elections and failed - what was different this time?

Muhammadu Buhari - thought to be a radical Muslim - was victim of a supposed assassination attempt in July 2014 that bore all the hallmarks of Boko Haram he then promised to end the insurgency within months if elected - THAT is what gained him support and won him the election - an excellent plan by the CIA X(

In Nigeria it is even possible to buy a FAKE assassination attempt X(
