French police make arrest over 'advanced' terror plot

A person in the “advanced stages” of a plot to attack the country was arrested on Thursday evening northwest of Paris and security forces locked down the area during a major search, said Bernard Cazeneuve, the French interior minister.

Police are carrying out raids in the Argenteuil suburb of Paris following the arrest of a person at 5.30pm who was believed to be planning a terrorist attack. A building has been evacuated and sniffer dogs and anti-mine experts are at the scene to search for explosives.

Cazeneuve confirmed that a “high level suspect” involved in planning an attack on French soil “at an advanced stage” had been arrested. The police operation took place at Boulevard General Delambre.

Cazeneuve said an attack had been foiled: “These searches follow an arrest by the DGSI (intelligence services) on Thursday morning that allowed us to stop a planned bombing in France that was at an advanced stage.”

The minister confirmed that the arrested suspect was of French nationality and belonged to a terrorist network. The suspect had been under surveillance by police for several months.

France has been on high alert since the 13 November attacks in Paris that killed 130 people and injured hundreds. Cazenueve said there had been 75 arrests since the beginning of the year, and 28 suspects had been jailed.

French police foil 'advanced’ terror plot near Paris

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve on Thursday said police had foiled a terror plot that was in its “advanced stages” after an arrest and search in the Parisian suburb of Argenteuil.

Cazeneuve, speaking at a press conference late on Thursday, said there were no links "at this stage" between the foiled plot and recent terrorist attacks in Paris or Brussels.

The interior minister said bomb squads were on site in the building located around 15 kilometres north of the French capital.

“This arrest is the result of a careful investigation that began several weeks ago, and which mobilised important human and technical surveillance resources, as well as close and ongoing co-operation with European intelligence agencies," Cazeneuve said.

He noted that the person arrested was a French national, implicated at a "high level" in the plot, but offered no other details.

Witnesses told France's i-Tele network that the immediate area had been locked down, and residents were unable to return home.

Cazeneuve’s announcement comes two days after three suicide bombers killed 31 people in Brussels and six days after Salah Abdeslam, the sole surviving participant in the November 13 Paris attacks, was apprehended by Belgian police.
