How to get rid of giant spiders that are now invading UK

British homes are being invaded by giant spiders:
Here’s how to get rid of them :ymparty:

It’s a bad day for arachnophobes: according to spider experts (aka arachnologists), there’s an army of a new breed of giant spiders about to invade our homes to lay their eggs.

Cue millions of us lining up the old glass and cardboard combo – or quite frankly, doing away with it altogether, as we run away screaming.

Why are giant spiders moving in?

According to arachnologist Chris Ayre, one of the biggest spiders in Europe, Eratigena atrica, is looking for a dry, warm place to mate – and our homes will provide the perfect love nest.

As the weather turns cooler and wetter this month, giant house spiders – which are relatives of the domestic house spider and can grow up to 12cm long – will descend. (12cm = 5inches - spiders in countryside are often that size)

“Spiders don’t specifically want to enter your home; in fact they’d rather stay away as there’s less food and it’s too dry and clean,” says Simon Garrett, head of learning at Bristol Zoological Society, which runs Living With Spiders phobia courses.

Most species of spider stay outside all the time and never come in houses. However, in autumn, mature male house spiders start to move around in search of mates.

“Although most remain outside, some will move into a house if there is an entry point for them. It is this need to mate that changes their behaviour, so it seems as though they suddenly come from nowhere at certain times.”

What you need to know giant house spiders

While the females rarely leave their nests, and only then to feed, the males are often spotted from now until October wandering around looking for a mate. The females can lay hundreds of eggs and in each egg sac there can be up to 60 ‘spiderlings’.

Like many spiders, these brown bugs seek out corners to build their webs, so you’ll spot them between boxes in cellars, behind cupboards, in attics, near window openings and in other spots where they’re relatively undisturbed.

Unfortunately, there’s not a lot you can do to stop them coming into your house. “If they come across any small opening, they can easily get in,” says Garrett.

“Some people say you can stop spiders by using conkers, but after a short time they dry up and nothing will really repel them fully. The best you can do is make sure there aren’t any leaky pipes or openings.”

But the good news is, these giants prefer to run away than attack humans – and their bites aren’t harmful, although they can sting a little if they manage to pierce the skin.

“Very few species of spider will bite people and of those that try, only a small number can even break our skin,” explains Garrett. “There are no inherently deadly species of spider found in the UK as their venom is designed for killing much smaller, simpler creatures for food, such as insects.”

Still, they look scary enough to give you nightmares… =))

Below are helpful tips to keep spiders away

Keep your house clean

Regular cleaning can reduce the build up of spiders in your home by dusting or vacuuming away any spider webs or egg sacs.

Spiders are less likely to return to that spot if they know they no longer have a home and their offspring have been removed.

On top of that make sure that all the hidden nooks or crannies have been kept sparkling since spiders love to hid away in dark, undisturbed spots.

You should store your belongings in airtight containers rather than cardboard boxes or spiders may make a home in them.

Cover up the cracks

Make sure you minimise the amount of gaps and cracks in your floorboards, windows and doors so spiders cannot gain access to your home.

Try putting some mesh over any large holes or air vents to keep particularly big spiders away from your house.

Get your pet involved

Your dogs and cats are good at keeping spiders out of your house by chasing them and catching them.

Great news if you have a cat since they often use their natural hunting instincts to frighten spiders.

Switch off the light

If you keep the light on when you have your windows open your room could become filled with moths and other insects - which house spiders love to snack on.

With more food for the spiders in your house it will encourage more to move in with you.

I have nets over all my windows :D

Do not keep lights on near your entrance as this will attract nasty flying things

Especially, do not have lights on at your entrance when opening your door

If you have security lights do NOT place them adjacent to the door

A well-fed spider=happy spider=not leaving=unhappy human

Leave out citrus peel

Spiders hate the smell of citrus peels - particularly lemons and limes - so you should save the peels and put them in places spiders love to hang out.

Place the peels on window sills, on top of bookcases but you should replace these at least every four days so the peels still smell fresh and don't dry out.

Use home-made remedies

As well as lime and lemons, spiders also hate peppermint so if you spray peppermint oils around the windows and door spiders should run away.

For a handy way to spread the smell mixing 10 to 15 drops of peppermint oil with water into a spray bottle.

As a bonus your house will also smell minty fresh.

Buy cedar wood furniture

For some weird reason spiders also are sensitive to the fragrance of cedar wood. If you don't fancy buying all new furniture you could get cedar-wood blocks and put them in your garden or near the same hotspots spiders love to climb through

Change your bed

Draws in divan beds make ideal nesting boxes for spiders

Divans are easy for spiders to climb on

Spaces beneath divans are also ideal hiding places for spiders so make sure they are cleaned regularly

If you have any ideas please share them with us :ymhug:

I have many jumping spiders in my house, I let them alive, for they are good cleaners and I hope they could eat mosquitoes.

The other fact is that they don't bite.

Sex-crazed spiders the size of MICE set to invade homes this autumn

Sex-crazed spiders are real – and they could be coming to a town near you this autumn.

The creatures, which have the ability to grow up to 12cm long, usually harbour in the deepest and darkest corners of your home.

But as soon as autumn hits, they emerge from their hiding places and go on a hunt for female partners.

In Derbyshire, residents are being warned ahead of time and are advised not to kill them, but put them in a shed.

Steve McGrail, from Pro-Kill Environmental, said that male spiders are normally reclusive but come into the open by their urge to mate.

He told the Derbyshire Times: ‘The male spiders come out the woodwork during this time of year as it is breeding season and they are searching for female spiders.

‘They are actually there in the home at other times of year but they are hidden away – under the floor, in the attic, in the basement. If you find them, it’s pretty much impossible to rid your house of them.

‘They may disappear for a period of time, but other spiders will come in their place.

He advises that ‘if you find them is put them in a shed – it’s a case of out of sight, out of mind. If you put them outside they are likely to die.’

The spider infestation has already affected many households in the area over the past few weeks, with many reporting that the creatures are almost as big as mice.
