I haven't heard about "wa" being used like that...

As Abdur pointed out, UE, we use "Ya" in Kurdish too... But in Kurdish we have a different phenomenon too...
We change the end of names to an "o" - although it is impolite, and outright rude to call an elder with an o ending...
Let me give you some example;
Abdur = Abdo (Ewdo in "total" Kurdish)
Ehmed = Ehmedo
Sinan = Sino
Fatih = Fato
Ednan = Edo
Cemal = Cemo
You could use the o ending on somebody younger or lesser than yourself... But not older or greater than yourself... Nor your equals (in both age and social status)...
