I´ve heard that Avşar is a Kurdish name. I find it strange that Avşar also is supposedly a Turkish tribe. Does anyone know why it´s spelt exactly the same?

Abshar in Farsi means waterfall , so it may come from farsi to both kurdish and turkish .

From what I know, it is a Kurdish word and also a name for boys.

Awşar/Avşar litterally means: Wake Water or more freely translated: Water which is awake (alive)

Aw/Av = Water
Şar = Awake

it can be kurdish which goes to farsi

in farsi , abshar means watterfall..

but intresting that Shar in kurdish means City , so it can be City of water .
shar in farsi doesnt mean anything.. (Shehr means City in farsi)

so it can be kurdish which persians use it for wattefall .
specially that , most of the waterfall of iran is in mountains (kurdistan) not in desters or sea or jungle... :wink:
