The security committee of the Kirkuk Provincial Council has announced the start of the second phase of the security trench around the city of Kirkuk, which includes the construction of security towers and the installation of surveillance cameras along the trench.
The decision was made on Thursday, July 30 during the meeting of the security committee of the council headed by the Kirkuk Governor Najmadin Karim.
Ahamd Askari, a member of the committee told PUK Media “We have decided to finish the first phase of the project as soon as possible and are starting the second phase.”
“The second phase of the project includes building of security towers and the installation of surveillance cameras on the trench,” Askari said and added that the project is due to finish by the beginning of 2014.
The decision of digging the security trench around the city of Kirkuk was made following the persistent violence and insurgency in the city, and despite heavy criticism for the project by the Arabs of the council and the city as well.
