The decision for building a statue for the Kurdish Feyli martyrs in Kirkuk was made along with the series other sculptures and statues in the different provinces of Iraq following a proposal by the Iraqi Ministry of Culture.

The governor’s office announced the plans for building a statue for the Kurdish Feyli martyrs in Kirkuk as well another one depicting peace and serenity between the different components of Kirkuk. The decisions were made following the governor’s meeting with the Iraqi deputy Minister of Culture on September 1.
Apart from the series of artworks, the decision for allocating a plot of land was also made to build a centre for the Feyli culture and arts.
Feylis are a Kurdish Shi’a community living in Baghdad and the Diyala Province of Iraq around Khanaqin and Mandali, and across the Iranian border, mainly in the provinces of Luristan, Kermanshah and Ilam. They number an estimated 6,000,000 people. The Fayli Kurds are an important community within the wider Kurdish people. They have faced repetitive displacements from their lands and serious crimes during the reign of the former Baath regime.
