Syria Opposition Blasts Kurd Self-Rule as 'Hostile'

The main Syrian opposition alliance dubbed as "hostile" forces Wednesday Kurdish groups that control large swathes of the country's north after they proclaimed provisional self-rule.

Kurdish militia, dominated by the Democratic Union Party (PYD), sister party of veteran Turkish rebel group the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), have held the Afrin region of northwestern Syria and big chunks of the northeast for more than a year.

On Monday, they announced that after talks in Qamishli, on the Turkish border, they had decided to declare provisional self-rule in areas under their control, modelling neighboring Iraq, where the Kurds have had nominal autonomy from Baghdad since 1970.

Both Afrin and the whole northeast region around Qamishli are mainly populated by Kurds, who form 10 percent of Syria's population and are significant minorities in Turkey, Iran and Iraq -- all major players in the 32-month conflict.

The Sunni Arab-dominated main opposition alliance, the Syrian National Coalition, has been at pains to keep the Kurds on side. Its main faction, the Syrian National Council, even named secular Kurdish dissident Abdulbaset Sayda as its leader last year.

But mounting violence between the Kurds and al-Qaida loyalists -- who form a major battlefield component of the Sunni Arab-dominated rebellion -- has sparked a deepening rift between the Kurds and the mainstream opposition to President Bashar Assad.

"The PYD is a group hostile to the Syrian revolution," the National Coalition, the opposition group recognized by most Arab and Western governments, said in its statement formalizing the breach with the main Kurdish militia.

"Its declaration of self-rule amounts to a separatist act shattering any relationship with the Syrian people who are battling to achieve a free, united and independent state, liberated from tyranny and sovereign over all its territory," the alliance said.

It accused the main Kurdish faction of "attacking units of the Free Syrian Army... and of shirking the struggle against Assad's regime.

This public breach threatened to add grist to the Damascus government's longstanding argument that its nominally secular leadership provides vital protection to the Kurdish, Druze and Christian minorities, as well as the Alawite community of Assad himself.

It also threatened to fan the flames of ethnic conflict in northeastern Syria where al-Qaida loyalists have assumed the banner of the Sunni Arab majority in its deadly battle against Kurdish militia that has driven tens of thousands of Kurdish civilians to seek refuge in neighboring Iraq in recent months.

Then forget them, they had their chance, but even just removing the word "Arab" from the title of the country was a major issue for them. I remember watching one SNC rep on TV once, and he kept insisting that no area was 100% Kurd, that was his only argument. But the idiot can not admit that no area is 100% Arab either.

At first, I thought it would be best for us to support the FSA and SNC, but not anymore.

If they face Arabs, they should find an agreement with Turkey and KRG. They have not much alternatives, W. Kurdistan is locked between Syria and Turkey and KRG. It can not survive without opened borders.

True, SNC is just chest beating, they will except the facts and probably closely cooperate soon, they have no choice. We Will have a 3 power, deceltralized model just like Iraq. Iraqi, Syria, and the Kurdish stàtes will probably all start to cooperate as a region union probably.

Sadly I am far from happy with the Democratic Union Party (PYD) connection to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) - firstly because the Great God Ocalan no longer wants Kurds to be independent - secondly because the PYD have gone out on a limb by declaring independence when by rights it should be a declaration made by and for the Kurdish population of Syrian occupied Kurdistan - I am getting well and truly fed up with all these little demiGods - the only way forward is for the Kurdish population to unite - remember my new mantra:

I am a Kurd - I want my country back

The wise thing at this critical times is not to alienate PYD. The solution is to cooperate with them to create their trust with the rest of other Kurd political forces. They have done a great job on the battlefield alone. We can not afford to weaken their position against all the odds.

I don't think there is anything wrong if they collaborate or a part of PKK. All Kurds should be proud of PKK. If it was not for PKK NK people would have by now converted to Turks and lost their Kurdish identity, roots and culture. Bearing in mind PKK has a become a highly experienced battlefield force, which people of Kurdistan can not afford to lose.

Yesterday is not important, but to day is very important. Kurds should use and exploit Beshar Assad or any one else or any one else to their advantages. The important thing for Kurds to know is not to let Beshar Assad or the opposition defeats the other. Luckily even if we don't exploit this advantage neither one of them can defeat the other. For example it is not in the interests of Israel either one defeats the other. So it wouldn't let it to happen. That is a bless for Kurds

The Kurds greatest power is not in their knowledge of fighting - it is in their vast numbers - they need to unite and work together - all the petty in-fighting does is weaken them X(

Well PYD is bullying other Kurdish parties in Syria. Their 'Rojava project' is to make a PKKistan but they would face their own people for that. Western Kurds are not all brainwashed.

The most interesting step will be how kind of reception Northern Kurds will give to Barzani after all that words-war with Salih Muslim.

Unfortunately in this region unless you have a power to force yourself, no one will take notice of you.

On the visit of Kak Massood to Diar Baker, Turkish prime minister welcomed him as the president of Kurdistan. Before PKK took arms even it was illegal to speak Kurdish or mention Kurd or Kurdistan. But now a Turkish Prime minister mentions the word of Kurdistan. Because of armed struggle of PKK Turks have learned an important lesson and have changed their attitude towards Kurds completely. So unless you have a force to force yourself, in this region no one takes notice of you.

Obviously it is very important for Kurds get united. It is the job of PYD not to monopolise power in WK. However there is no justification whatsoever to undermine PYD at this critical times.

I supported the PKK because they liberated the woman and gave them an equality unheard of in the middle east - I supported the PKK because they gave Kurdish people self-awareness and self-esteem - the PKK put education high on its' list of priorities

I had friends who died fighting in the PKK - but they died for a FREE KURDISTAN - they gave their lives so that future generations of Kurds would know FREEDOM

What we see in Western Kurdistan are far too many self-appointed political leaders and independent groups pulling in different directions - the wants and needs of the indigenous Kurdish populations are being overshadowed by these self-appointed power crazed megalomaniacs X(

Perhaps you know the old adage:

"United we stand divided we fall "

I total agree with everything kak Londoner said. In that region, military strength speaks loudly and just being a whimpy pacifists gets you nowhere. Im proud to see that my people are using all the means at their disposal (political/legal, economical/commercial, geographical/logistical, military/war, etc).

They chopped up our homland like a dead carcass thinking it was dead inorder to feed it to the dogs, but that body still had life in it and it is fighting to get back up.

Regarding President Barzanis visit to Amed- I am not sure what to think yet, still trying to analyze it.
