DUHOK, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',— President of Qawalis of Yazidis in Kurdistan, Iraq and the world, Suleiman Safo Qawali passed away after a suffering from a stroke.

Qawal, Hassoun Irian Koji close to the family said the head of Qawalis of Yazidis in Kurdistan, Iraq and the world, Suleiman Safo passed away after suffering from a sudden stroke on Sunday evening.

"He was transferred to Azadi Hospital in Duhok, but unfortunately he passed away “.

Suleiman Safo Qawali ( 85 years), one of the main members of the Yazidi Supreme spiritual Council lived in Bahzani town affiliated to Bashiqah sub-district (17 km north-east of Mosul).

Qawalis are one of the Yazidi religious ranks specialize in memorizing sacred religious texts as some of them are specialized in playing with tambourine in the holy religious ceremonies of Yazidis.

According to the researchers, Yazidi religion is old Kurdish religion because all religious texts are recited in Kurdish language in rituals and religious rites.

The Yazidis are a Kurdish religious group linked to Zoroastrianism and Sufism. They currently live primarily in Iraq's Kurdistan region and the Nineveh Province of northern Iraq.

Some 350,000 Yazidis live in villages in Iraqi Kurdistan region and around Mosul, with additional communities in Transcaucasia, Armenia, Georgia, Turkey, and Syria, estimatedwww.Ekurd.net to over 600,000 worldwide. Additional communities in Armenia, Georgia, Turkey, and Syria have been in decline since the 1990s, as their members having emigrated to Europe, especially to Germany.
