According to the Kurdish Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, a Kurdish Hajji has caught the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers) whilst in Saudi Arabia.
According to Saudi Arabia’s Health Ministry, cases of Mers have increased by 25%. In Saudi Arabia, 414 people have been infected while 115 have died this past week.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs Mariwan Naqshbandi told local media that there are currently 3,000 Iraqi Kurds in Saudi Arabia and 34,000 are due to travel there soon.
Naqshbandi confirmed that only one Hajji from the Kurdistan Region has caught the respiratory illness and that there is no ban on travelling to Saudi Arabia for the time being. However, if other countries were to put a ban on travelling to Saudi, the Kurdistan Region may consider doing this too.
Mers is a viral infection that can cause pneumonia and kidney failure and is spread through close contact among people. It has been particularly prevalent in Saudi Arabia, where the virus hangs on to camels.
Unconfirmed reports claim that Saudi Arabia’s Health Minister Adel Faqiyah has been infected by the virus. A number of nurses recently died after coming in close contact with infected patients.
Kurds should not go while the risk is so high - not because they themselves could die - but because they are putting others at risk - they could take the Mers back to Kurdistan and spread it among family and friends
