The level of stupidity among arabs is progressing high day by day. The funny thing is that the sponsor of Barcelona is qatar foundation who are pro israeli.
As far as I know no one took their calls seriously in Gaza City from what I read. Most of the people turned up in their cafes, nargil lounges, etc. to watch the game despite the groups calls for them to stay inside and not benefit the viewing numbers.
I suspect though if we were in reverse, if Barca players had done something like pay respect to Ataturk or something if they visited Turkey, we'd be upset too.
Shalit was an Israeli Soldier in Palestinian captive. Atatürk and his policy is the murder of hundred thousands and the reason behind the assimilation of millions of Kurds. You cant compare them. However I would agree if Hamas was outrages if Barcelona would have invited a well known Palestinian hater but this wasnt the case.
I know you can't compare Shalit with Ataturk, but to Palestinians, at least those that support Hamas, Shalit is representative of a government that Palestinians despise, one they see as responsible for doing the same things to them that Ataturk did to Kurdistan. A better comparison would be the way you might view a soldier of Turkey- the individual himself doesn't matter, but the group he is fighting for, the ideals of the Turkish military and its role in ethnic cleansing of Kurdistan, it's another thing entirely. I guess media hasn't focused on Kurds as much as they have on Palestine, but I'm sure PKK has also engaged in kidnappings of soldiers and government collaborators in the past, though not as long as Shalit was kept.
We would be throwing a fit if any Turkish soldier was honored in any way, I guarantee you.
All I'm saying is that it's not really surprising that they would be dismayed at this double standard. We're not seeing released Palestinian fighters getting tickets to football games, are we?
