Kurdistan's ruling party blamed for delays in holding counci

PostAuthor: Aslan » Wed May 01, 2013 10:28 pm

The region’s last provincial council elections were held eight years ago in 2005. This is when elections should be held every four years. Critics believe the regional government simply does not want to hold the elections.

Some opposition MPs want Kurdistan’s prime minister to appear before the regional parliament to explain the delays. But MPs from the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party say there are disagreements over amendments to the council elections law. They claim that opposition demands have delayed the elections. Council officials have very little power compared to the regional government. This is where some others believe concerns about giving the councils more legislative power is a source of dispute.

Various reasons have been given over the years to explain the reasons behind delays in holding the provincial council elections in Kurdistan’s three provinces. But now the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party is criticizing the opposition for using the media to win election support.

Kurdistan's parliamentary and presidential elections is scheduled for September 21. But a question mark still hangs over the council elections. Iraq’s central government held its council elections earlier in April.

As opposition parties say delays in holding the elections are not related to amending the elections law, They claim that the law is just an excuse for delaying the elections. But the regional government insists that it’s not to blame for the delays.
