Why are women in Iraqi Kurdistan setting themselves on fire?

PostAuthor: Aslan » Mon Jun 03, 2013 5:14 pm

Even though the Kurdistan region of Iraq has progressed economically and socially in the last few years, this northern part of the country remains a very patriarchal and conservative society.

Women continue to endure domestic violence, social injustice and discrimination.

Doctors say that each month they see hundreds of cases of self-immolation which are often the result of such treatment.

This certainly disproves the claim of an expert, in girl's meat market from Scandinavia to Mexico to the end of the world, that in Kurdistan they take care of their girls preciously and kindly.

Shut up Londoner. You dont even know what the news is about.

Its about that a girl who had a love affair witha boy. She asked her boyfriend to marry her, but he rejected it, because he only wanted a affair. Thats why she set herself on fire.

So this report is more a argument against love affairs.

Another reason :

Woman sets herself on fire and dies because her husband takes a second wife

Kalar: Lieutenant colonel Hassan Muhammad spokesman of Garmian police told Warvin: “the woman lives in Shahidan district of Kalar, on June 2, 2013 she poured kerosene over her body because of her husband and set herself ablaze, she was transferred to Kalar hospital but died of high percentage burns”. lieutenant colonel Hassan also stated: “ according to the investigations, the reason behind setting herself ablaze was because her husband took a second wife, so the judge order her husband’s arrest and a case has been opened for the incident”. A source from directorate of confronting violence against women in Garmian told Warvin: “the woman’s name is S.A.A., she is 33 years old and has 4 kids”.

In France many teens and even children hang, sometimes for real suicide, sometimes by accident when they play to choking game : quite fashionable.

What I wonder is why Kurds choose a such horrible way to die : burning alive. It is the worst and the most painful death and it is a hell if they rescue. Is that an old and traditional way of suicide or is it new in Kurdish society ? In a country where you can find weapons in all houses, I would have thought that shooting or hanging would be the most common way of suicides.

Terribly sad

This girl is only 14 years old surely that is too young to marry even if the boy had agreed to marry her?

Was the boy in fact a much older man?

Whatever the reason it is a terrible thing for such a young girl to do to herself

It is a culture I am afraid. I remember in the village I grew whenever an argument in the family or between neighbour went too far led to the threats by burning. Additionally burning has a very old ancient root. Kurds are indo-Aryans, who were not burying their dead people but burning them. This is some thing still exist in India. Additionally when a man died, his wife had to die also by burning herself. This custom existed until India became a British colony.

Poor woman who had probably never done anything wrong :((

She should have poured kerosene over her disgusting husband and set fire to him X(
