The Kurdish Regional Government has signed an oil exploration contract with the U.S. firm Chevron.
Under the accord, Chevron would explore the Qara Dagh field, which encompasses 860 kilometers.

“Chevron will acquire an interest in and operatorship of the Qara Dagh block production sharing contract from the Kurdistan regional government,” Chevron said on June 17.

This marked the third Chevron project in Kurdistan, in a move that sparked threats from the Iraqi Oil Ministry in Baghdad. In 2012, the ministry banned Chevron from operating in the rest of Iraq.
