The former Iraqi president’s half-brother, Sabawi Ibrahim al-Tikriti, died of cancer in one of the hospitals of Baghdad and the court has ordered that his body be handed over to his family.
The spokesman of the Iraqi Ministry of Justice, Wissam al-furaiji stated “The convict Sabawi Ibrahim al-Tikriti, the half-brother of Saddam Hussein had died today, Monday, July 8 in the one of the hospitals of Baghdad.”
“Sabawi had died in hospital following his transfer to the hospital by the penitentiary administration for his progressive health deterioration.”
“According to his health record, the cause of his death was cancer for which he had been diagnosed following his arrest by the US military after the toppling of the former regime,” al-Furaiji stated.
“Sabawi was sentenced to death by hanging for his criminal charges against innocent Iraqi people and after completion of his respective health paperwork, his body will be handed to his family,” he added.
Sabawai Ibrahim had several different posts during the reign of Saddam Hussein. During the Gulf War he served as the chief of the Iraqi Secret Service and later served as the head of general security between the years 1991 to 1996 and was then assigned as a general advisor to Saddam Hussein. The news of his arrest was made public on February 27 2005. He held the six of diamonds position in the most-wanted Iraqi playing cards and was number 36 in the top 55 most wanted Iraqis list.
