I am not 100% sure but it would explain why no trace of the plane was ever found
I think that America would have wanted to put a lid on it due to the loss of all those innocent lives

The USA didn't have to put a lid on it because if the plane was hijacked for use against any USA target the passengers would have died anyway. So no one would have blamed USA if it had shot it down.
