'He didn't want to make a fuss': How Terry Wogan kept his battle with cancer secret even from close friends while his wife - the only woman he ever loved - nursed him to the end

Sir Terry Wogan died on Sunday at 77 surrounded by his loved ones

He kept his fight against cancer a secret from everyone but close family

BBC executives and colleagues were convinced he would return to radio

Instead of revealing diagnosis, he told close friends he had a back problem

He was cared for by his wife, who he remained devoted to for 50 years

Sir Terry Wogan kept his fight against cancer a secret from everyone but close family members because he did not want to 'make a fuss', friends said yesterday.

The veteran broadcaster died yesterday at 77 surrounded by loved-ones after his health deteriorated rapidly.

After disappearing from the airwaves suddenly last year, his illness was kept so private that executives and colleagues at the BBC were convinced he would return to the radio within weeks.

Instead of revealing the diagnosis, he told close friends he had a back problem.

The star – whose long-running Radio 2 breakfast show catapulted him to nationwide fame – was hailed as the country's greatest broadcaster.

The Prime Minister led tributes, describing Sir Terry as 'someone millions came to feel was their own special friend'.

But signs of his poor health were revealed in November when he pulled out of presenting the Children In Need telethon on the eve of the broadcast, blaming his withdrawal on surgery for his back.
